It'd be great if we can find a Jim Leyritz type player. I don't think one exists now-a-days though. Leyritz could play 3rd, 1st, C, and OF. (of course DH as well...) His defensive might've not been great.. but honestly, I was too young to really remember. His offense was around replacement level , but I remember him having good power... although, my memory is from a kid and could very well be clouded. But my point is, it'd be nice to have a bench piece that can backup catcher/3rd/1st... and still be replacement level with the bat (unlike Romine...) It'd be nice if Gary only caught <100 games and spent rest of the time at DH.. to keep his body fresh. Well, we signed Danny Espinosa

Lol... hey, I never heard of him, but looking at his stats, he did have good power numbers with the Nats

Back to Leyritz.. guy could take his walks... career OBP 100 points higher than his AVG... Leyritz was WAY better than replacement level with the bat. He had surprising range at 3B, but his ability to catch was utilized more over the course of his career. I would have liked to have seen him get a shot at a full season of play with 3B being the primary position. He could rake, my man...He could rake...

I meant replacement level as far as his OPS+... It was usually in the low 100's.. Was coming on here to post this Judge defensive highlight video. Seeing some of these catches still give me chills... and a minor heart attack thinking he might have gotten hurt. It was suck to lose Judge bc of his aggressive play in the outfield... He's such a slugger that his defense is over looked in my opinion. Guy can cover some ground out there!!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRoU2hYUrIEMy favorite is when he doubled up the runner... that was an awesome play.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHR_YfATsUMHere's a Sanchez defensive highlight video.. for all the BS about his defense... the kid has a great arm, well above average in throwing out runners. In fact, his defensive metrics show him as a positive behind the plate. Does he need to work on his passed balls? Of course. Are they as big of a deal as they're made out to be , over the course of a full season? Probably not. Do I think he will improve? FUCK YEAH. He's looking much slimmer this winter.. compared to the bulk muscle he put on last winter. (yes, muscle, he did NOT come to camp out of shape... as some have said... baseball uniforms are not the most flattering)

Here's a surprising fact about Jim Leyritz. Yes, he had an OPS + for his career of 106...but remember he didn't reach MLB until age 26. After scuffling for a couple of seasons, his combined slashes for 1993 and 1994 were whopping nice numbers. In a total of 598 PA 508 AB, which is about the equivalent of a player that played, oh 140G as a starter, Leyritz ripped the ball to the tune of .287/.388/.522 (OPS 141+). In the old traditional numbers that translated to .287/31/111, plus 90 runs scored in spite of no SB...So that was Jim Leyritz in his prime...Odd, I just posted this stuff on Scout.Com or 24/7 or whatever they call that over there now...I was referring to prospect Donnie Sands. While Sands hasn't come close to flashing prime years Leyritz power, he has shown that he can hit and get on base consistently and perhaps can add more pop. The correlation is that he also plays C and has played 3B, so it would be nice if he can keep the 3B play going, maybe even add 1B to add to his value...Sands is an underdog, but I like him a lot...

In another installment of my misc bullshit.. The 2001 AL CY Young award.. Why did Roger Clemens win the award? His own teammate, MOOOOOSE was the better pitcher... by every metric in the book sadly, the advanced metrics weren't used much in 2001, it was all about wins and Clemens went 20-3. I wonder with Moose would already in the HOF if won the Cy Young that year?
