I was wondering, how many of you working folk have next Monday, July 3rd off? Is your office closed? I work in the construction industry and we're open for business because the summer is our prime working season, but some of the employees in our office are mad about it. I was wondering what's going on with other companies and businesses out there?

I was wondering what's going on with other companies and businesses out there? Chi, I was among the gainfully employed in the not-too-distant past. At least with the Feds -- never a good comparison, I realize -- the only actual day off was the Fourth itself. But when the Fourth was on a Tuesday or a Thursday, opening up a four-day weekend possibility, what normally happened was that anyone with enough seniority would take Monday or Friday off, leaving either the rookies or the workaholics who would rather be at the office than off enjoying themselves. These two categories always made for easy staffing. Plus normally around 2 PM Washington would chime in and announce an early closing time for Monday or Friday. But it wasn't much different during my time in newspapers or the corporate world. Nobody expected to do much work on those days. At least I didn't. Almost 50 years in the working world and got away with it. Too late to reprimand me now.

I don't know why so many in my office are getting so uptight about working on the 3rd. Sorry inger for polluting your trivia thread with this, I thought I was posting in the B.S. thread.

I work for a civil engineering company and Monday July 3rd is not an official holiday though I am taking off as I'm sure many others are doing.

No heartbreak here. I love pollution and have probably polluted more threads in my time than any five other posters combined. I live with constant blue lights, and horny police invasions. The green house industry was always the worst for holidays. Not only did we almost always lose the few holidays we were “promised”, but the owners would often wait to announce that it would be a work day the day before the holiday, causing us to cancel any plans we might have been foolish enough to make. Last minute overtime was an almost daily occurrence, as well. Being what amounted to the highest level of management beneath the owners I developed my own phrase to utilize because the holidays invariably coincided with excessive overtime and last-minute orders, I simply would say, “It’s the nature of what we do.” Looking at the industry you are in, I believe that statement applies. I offer my permission for you to use it. It is true. It is work that all those people would love to have in the off-season, but won’t get. It’s the work that can make the difference as to whether or not your company will have a mediocre year or an excellent year. “It is the nature of what you do.”…

Thanks for answering guys. Some of my coworkers were acting like my employer was heartless for not giving them the 3rd too, so they could have a 4 day weekend. Of course they all have plenty of PTO, so use it!

Of course they all have plenty of PTO, so use it! I know some companies have Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve or the day after Thanksgiving baked into the vacation schedule, but I never heard of any place that got July 3 or 5 as a day off. Tell those slackers to straighten up and fly right!

Well, I thought that Paul Skenes would take the ball on three days rest in game three of the College World Series. Not only has Skenes not started, but now I am wondering if he will pitch in the finals at all. Still early in the game, but the coach of the Tigers said that the main focus was keeping Paul Skenes healthy. I just do not get it. There is no doubt that Skenes wanted the ball in this winner take all final game. Three days rest for a guy who just turned 21 in May? In 1974, Nolan Ryan threw 235 pitches in a game against the Red Sox. He then started another game three days later, pitching 6 scoreless innings. But the lack of rest tore a ligament in his arm nineteen years later on September 22, 1993.

Remember this commercial? Today, that would be a clock violation… 🤓 Addendum: Reminder to Chi “It is the nature of what we do.“ You will win a lot of discussions with this point. It may lose you a few friends, but those with wisdom will understand. The owners will love you…

No one is disrespectful but they're not overly friendly either, I only need one hand to count how many people there I would consider a friend.
