I have a bit of a personal interest in Greg, having seen him & Kevin Gausman play in HS. Two of my grandsons played in the same club team organization as him, a few years apart of course. I watched him up close while he was still with the Yanks playing in AZFL, and again while he was in ST trying to hook on with the Rangers. Was able to talk with him briefly on a few occasions, asked him how his injuries were healing...he said he was fine. I thought he had a good chance to make his "hometown" team, the Rockies, but it wasn't meant to be. I wish him the best, wherever his journey takes him.

The Orioles were 14 games over .500 in one run games last season. That alone can be a cautionary tale. We shall see. For the record the Yanks were six games undef .500 in one run games. Flip the two and the Yanks win 88 vs. the Orioles 87. The Orioles are a good young team, and they took great advantage of the Yankees misfortune last season. It’s going to be interesting to see what happens in 2024… Inger, I think the Yanks did poorly in one-run games because their offense was not good but their pitching was. I do think it's possible the Orioles could come back to earth a bit this year. A lot went right for them. Our inability to rally after falling behind was sickening. As soon as the opposition scored first or took a mid game lead the smell of death began to linger. Buzzards circled the stadium. It didn’t much matter who was batting. Strikeouts, double plays, pop ups, and rolled over ground balls became the expectation. Our most-oft used clean up hitter, the one that people say we need because he’s our third best bat drove in 66 runs. I’d like to blame him, but when there’s no one on base, who are you supposed to drive in?… Sixty six. For a clean up hitter. How paltry can it get?…

Still only 31 years old. I really thought he was built for Yankee Stadium. But between the long swing, taking meatballs right over the plate, and the injuries, it never happened. Those 2017 Yankees were a bit like the 2023 Orioles in the sense that they looked like a juggernaut in the making but it reached its high point that year rather than it being a starting point like most of us thought. Perhaps a cautionary tale for Baltimore. I was so confident that Bird was going to be a great player for the Yankees. Thought he was going to be a batting champ and a perennial all-star. That's just one of the reasons I don't gamble.

Potential is a great word to use for minor leaguers. Once you’re in the majors it all about production…

Because of the injury and how IMO, it was mishandled, combined with that fat tub of lard, Randy Levine calling him out for not being hurt, I've always pulled for him.

I'm off to visit some relatives in frigid Ottawa, Canada! Will check-in but won't be regular on the board this weekend. Be back Monday. Cheers!

I knew a guy who did some consulting for the Yankees back in the early 2000's. He liked most of the people he dealt with, He said George could be difficult, but he liked him. He thought Gene Michael was a good guy. He also had contact often with players and they were all pretty good guys. The one guy he had nothing good to say about was Levine.

We're being bombarded with a huge snow storm today in Chicagoland. I stayed home form work because my car won't make it through the unplowed streets. After the snow, the deep freeze is coming on Sunday with temps in the single digits. Be safe everyone!

Enjoy your visit Kaybli. I grew up on the Canadian border in Ogdensburg, NY, which is 50 miles from Ottawa. We would drive to Ottawa often to shop, sight see, have dinner (especially Chinese), skate on the canal, see the Ice Sculptures on Dow Lake and attend the Festival of Spring (the Tulip Festival). We still take our boat over to Brockville for dinner frequently. We still have a camp on the St. Lawerence River that we stay at in the Summer. If you're driving, watch out for "lake effect" storms. There are high wind and storm warnings this weekend in the North Country. Oburg Bob

I’ll just be happy to not freeze my butt off! 😂
