Yankees allowed deadline to lapse for qualifying offer to Didi Gregorius, who is now a free agent. I think that was the right move. I enjoyed having Didi here, but think they should move on and spend that money some other way and would not have taken the risk of him accepting the QO, which is more than they should have been willing to pay him. I didn't love the trade when they acquired him but I was wrong about that and enjoyed having him on the team. I would give Tyler Wade and Thairo Estrada a shot at making the team which would allow them to continue to play Gleyber at 2B and DJ playing everywhere.

Yeah, I wasn't really looking forward to Didi coming back.. I would rather have Gleyber at SS and DJ at 2nd though. I would also try to extend DJ if we could work out something friendly for both team and player. I'm down with Estrada being a backup IF.. I'm STILL not sold on Wade even after his Sept in the bigs.. But I hope he proves me wrong.

I wouldn't re-sign Didi either but that doesn't mean I won't miss him. Appreciate all he's done for the team. Will never forget the Wild Card game I was at against Minnesota where he hit the three run HR to get us back in the game. Or the two HRs against Kluber in the playoffs Game 5. Or the Grand Slam against Minnesota this year in Game 2, a game I was at as well! Here's to you Didi! Always a class act!

I read this story with great interest back in September when it was originally published. At that time I had no reason to be super-excited about Swanson. I did have a lot of respect for what he did with Garver, and in turn for Minnesota’s pitching staff... Now I do. It would be great if he could help Sanchez improve his defensive game. Garver is just about Sanchez size, too...

I’m glad. He’s just a bat, and he’s not getting any younger...

I’m glad. He’s just a bat, and he’s not getting any younger... On one hand he's a dangerous bat. On the other, less money for Boston to use on Mookie or Free Agents.

Back to Didi for a moment. His mid-season start to the season means he spent the first few weeks back experiencing spring training. He started off surprisingly quickly, then predictably slumped all the way down to .220.
Then, from June 24 on for the next 57 games, Didi hit .259/.296./.522. In those games he drilled 11 doubles and 15 HR with 51 RBI. Had he not slumped, and done so horribly and devoid of any sense of power in his last dozen games, his rate numbers on the season would have been quite close to what we might have expected. Was he a bit fatigued at that point?
In any event, even before Didi’s injury, I was skeptical of wanting to see Didi back. It’s not Didi, mind you. It’s the tendency for 30+ year old SS to decline. At a reasonable rate, I’d love to hold on to that LH bat. At a reasonable rate, and the understanding that he may not be playing SS everyday.
Would it really hurt the Yankees to duplicate what they did with DJLM? To have another talented defensive player that could play anywhere in the infield (maybe some corner OF on occasion as well)? Under those terms, might he be well worth hanging onto?
We don’t always like his free-swinging ways, but that is part and parcel of why he drove in 51 runs in a 57 game span at one point in 2019.
It’s just something to think about...

It’s just something to think about... Not impossible to imagine he could still come back if the market isn’t as attractive as he expected. However, I think they should give Wade a shot at making the team. Late in the season he finally looked like he was ready to put together what his minor league performances have been promising for a while. I would spend the money on a starter personally.

That’s surprising to me. I thought he’d be looking to cash in one more time.

Garver is just about Sanchez size, too... I think the biggest issue is how he can help catchers to get better results framing pitches and therefore getting more strike calls for the staff. That will be really interesting to see if it happens.

Hopefully in the coming seasons, pitch framing will be a thing of the past when we have ROBOT UMPS!!!!

p.s. Isn't Gary already above average at stealing strikes? Not saying he can't improve... always room for improvement. Just got me a thinkin.. I thought I heard somewhere he was good at pitch framing.
