He took a lot of heat for that which, as I understand, was the reason he started the telethon. I understand he was a Major League A-Ho in real life. Yep, I think that was the consensus. Not one of the good guys. I remember they used to point to the fact that he was popular in France as proof that the French had no sense of humor. They do, of course, but it tends toward laughing at people who screw up. Dean Martin made him a star. I have also heard Jerry is not the nicest guy. A friend of mine who recently passed, said Dean on the other hand was a really nice guy. He added that Sinatra was as big a jerk as you could find.

Has anyone mentioned Jerry Lewis? I thought his low brow semi-retarded character played well in his early movies, but got old fast. At the end he was just a sad clown hawking his telethon. He was the best reason to NOT watch… I believe he was the inspiration for Adam Sandler’s early stuff and he grew old in me as well, although he seems to have recognized that and moved on to other characters… Believe or not our research team garnered sizable grants from MDA which Lewis supported in his telethon. Our group was featured in his telethon. As much as I'm incline toward anonymity, I couldn't believe my footage was used in his promotion. I never meet the man, however I'm grateful to those sizable grants in addition to Federal grants that lead to some significant research. Our team was together for over a decade before we moved on. We were motivated each day to see what results was generated. For me, it was never a 9-5 job burning the midnight oil.

I guess I (and some others) were evaluating his talent, not his generosity…

Different times today! What worked in the 40's doesn't work today! And if they saw in the 40's what we have today, they would be horrified! My favorites are Abbot and Costello! Still make me laugh and the TV shows were fantastic!

My favorite though is the Marx Brothers!

Before WPIX-TV would become a full-time station in the late 1950's, they would share NYC Educational Channel programming in the morning until 3PM. They would come on at 3PM, with Oliver and Hardy movies, then have their regular kids programming start afterwards. I love watching their movies. Also, I enjoyed watching the Marx Brothers, W.C. Fields, Abbott and Costello comedy films. WNEW-TV, channel 5 would show the East Side Kids movies on Saturdays. During the week they had excellent kids shows, hight lighted by Sandy Becker show.

I love buying box sets. Whenever I see them on sale/huge discounts, it catches my eyes. I have several box sets of Abbott/Costello. I bought a box set of Laurel/Hardy and the Honeymooners as a gift to my brother. He said, it's good thing to end the day with a good laugh prior to putting you head on a pillow. As with Honeymooners, 30 minutes of fun is enough to set good vibes for slumberlng.

Lauren, I agree with you, its better to end the day with humor, than all this serious stress and worry from the 11 O'clock news. Clipper

In the past, I've bought box sets of John Wayne and Clint Eastwood western movies, since he's a big fan. I hope he watched them!

Still make me laugh and the TV shows were fantastic! Lou's character had a crush on Hillary Brooke. Bud and Lou always seemed to aggravate Mr. Fields. Lou's scenes with "Stinky" played by Joe Besser always made me laugh.

I fully realize I’m probably a minority of one, but it takes every ounce of restraint I have to keep me from flinging myself out of the nearest window when I hear “Who’s On First?”.

Yep, I can't remember a Sunday back in the day when channel 11 didn't have an Abbott and Costello movie on before a Yankee game. I would watch channel 11 a lot because they had shows like Biography and Victory At Sea. Channel 11 also had Officer Joe Bolton that would host the 3 Stooges program, and Captain Jack McCarthy that would host the Popeye cartoon program. I like the Marx Brothers too, Duck Soup is my favorite Marx Brother movie.
