I sure wouldn't go to Yellowstone in July or August -- although I have in the past and had pretty good luck, mainly because we would start our day around 4 AM. We usually stay in West Yellowstone, but we've also stayed in Mammoth Hot Springs. But in any of those parks, one thing I have found is that if you get off on a hiking trail you quickly lose the crowds. Some place like Old Faithful or the boiling mud pots trail you have to be there at the break of day to enjoy, but really not many people venture very far away from the main sites. And of course by going in shoulder season like May or October, it really isn't bad. Two years ago we went to Grand Canyon NP in January -- you obviously have to pick your day at that time of year, we were staying in Sedona and when the weather was clear, we went. Always ready to run at a moment's notice, of course. It was beautiful. Hardly anyone was there, even at the typically crowded overlooks. A lot of the information spots were closed, but it was definitely worth the tradeoff. You would love Yellowstone. I hope you work it in sometime. It's truly spectacular. We'll be putting my advice to the acid test in about a week. We're headed to Great Smoky Mountains National Park -- by far the most visited of all national parks, more than the next three combined. We're hoping that by going before Memorial Day and our usual early starts, we'll be able to enjoy ourselves. GSMNP is actually free to enter, but the catch is you have to pay to park at the trailheads. We are pretty avid hikers, so we are reasonably good at winnowing out the crowds. We're getting off-season rates at a cabin just outside the park. I'll issue an after-action report to see if my smarty-pants recommendations pay off. Here's hoping you don't get caught in the "Smokey Mountain Rain." As long as I can avoid being On top of spaghetti, all covered with cheese. Were they still doing that one when you were a kid? Or is that just a boomer thing?

The last time I was in Rocky Mountain Park, Bear Lake was only accessible by shuttle due to limited parking. That area typically has a massive elk herd and is attraction #1 in the park. Twas probably in about 2017.
For a while Pikes Peak was only accessible by shuttle, but I believe that’s been “fixed”, though Seven Falls was purchased by t he Broadmoor and is now shuttle only. There seems to be a trend going on in the state…

How many of you were Cheers fans? Count me as 1. Me too. It was a great show, but IMO steadily declined as characters left. Woody was good, not as good as Coach. Rebecca, not as good as Diane. For MASH, Potter not as good as Blake, nor Winchester as good as Burns. I'd say younger BJ was a wash with Trapper.

I'm watching The Caine Mutiny and the first third of the film is much more melodramatic than I remember. Some of the best courtroom scenes ever. Definitely one of Bogart's greatest performances.
I watched William Friedkin's 2023 version and Kiefer Sutherland did a fantastic job in the role of Captain Queeg. I believe it was Friedkin's last film.

Are you still doing your movie podcast with your friend? Yep. Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam. The latest episode's theme was "the movie process" and we watched two films about making movies. We watched Fellini's masterpiece "8 1/2" and "Black Bear", with Aubrey Plaza in the starring role. Next we're watching two Hal Hartley films. He made some pretty good indie movies in the 90's.

By the way, the 54' version has some terrible special effects.
