RIP Kirk. Damn 103 is a lot of years to live. Indeed, a long life. Depends on your health and quality of life, though. One has to think that Hollywood money kept his lifestyle pretty interesting. Perhaps not Pipps-interesting, but a cool life nonetheless! Kind of doubting that Kirk Douglas lived the DOME “threesome a day keeps the doctor away” life up to the end, but hopefully he was doing okay...

Perhaps not Pipps-interesting, but a cool life nonetheless! No one has a life as interesting as Pipps. He is after all..... The Most Interesting Man in the World. And he has Mrs. Pipps to keep him away from the DOME “threesome a day keeps the doctor away” lifestyle to help him live longer...

How can a guy with a threesome a day get ticked off so easily and leave the forum? I thought he was a live and let live guy, living as an expat in Baja near the ocean?

Anyone have favorite Kirk Douglas’ movies or roles? “Champion” “Gunfight at the OK Corral” “20,000 LUTS” “Spartacus” Just watched Gunfight at the OK Corral about three weeks ago.Hadn’t seen that in ages. It holds up well against Costner’s “Wyatt Earp”, and the Kurt Russell movie “Tombstone”. Burt Lancaster’s portrayal of Doc Holliday was terrific and made the relationship with Douglas’s Wyatt Earp nice and edgy.

Anyone have favorite Kirk Douglas’ movies or roles? I think I've only seen him in Spartacus and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Anyone have favorite Kirk Douglas’ movies or roles? I think I've only seen him in Spartacus and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Pretty understandable since the dude was already 37 years old when I was born, so that was almost 60 by the time you were born...He was already a very well known star before I ever even experienced TV, where I might have caught him in a movie I didn’t understand yet. I think the first time I watched “20,000 LUTS” the only thing impactful to my was the giant squid. They could have put Pinocchio in the submarine for all noticed. I was maybe 4 or 5 years old. Really dig that sea monster...

I keep trying to sell that idea to my wife, but she's not buying it.

I remember as a little kid seeing him in "Ulysses." Main thing I remember was him poking out the eye of the Cyclops. Seemed like dirty pool, but then again Cyclops wasn't playing by Marquis of Queensbury either. Do you recall a film he made in the 60s called "The List of Adrian Messenger"? One of those all-star cast deals -- Douglas, Burt Lancaster, Frank Sinatra, Robert Mitchum, lots of others I am forgetting. Anyway, I remember "Get Smart" doing a parody called "The Mess of Adrian Listenger" featuring Pat Paulsen. A stupid thing to remember, for sure. Of course Kirk Douglas's career reached its zenith in the 1990s when he got a role on an episode of "The Simpsons."

My favorite Douglas role was in "Out of the Past" with Robert Mitchum. Mitchum was the star of the movie, but the scenes of them together are great. Douglas was also very courageous. He made sure blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo was hired to write "Spartacus". Took a lot of guts to do this during this time in our country's history.

Of course that was sort of like the giant squid for me, the only part I recalled because I was so young. You couldn’t help but feel a bit sorry for old “Cy” at that point. He no longer seemed so “Young”. <he really said that, didn’t he? One day, inger is definitely going to go over the wall>... Did you mean Mad TV did the parody, or was that really an episode of “Get Smart”? Maybe you missed it by “that much”?...

You really seem to be quite a follower of some of these old black and whites, desousa. Reading this thread makes me want to go back in time and review some of the stuff I should have been watching instead of a 37th showing of each of the “Three Stooges” episodes... I read yesterday that after “Gunfight” Burt Lancaster said <paraphrased> : Kirk Douglas can be difficult to work with. He’d be the first one to tell you that. I’d be the second. What a wonderful forum we have here that we can speak to other of life’s issues without having to stick to baseball only...
