5:21pm: Two team executives, Reds president of baseball operations Dick Williams and Brewers president of baseball ops David Stearns, expressed optimism Wednesday that the owners and players will hammer something out. Williams told Jim Day of Fox Sports Ohio that “both sides want to play,” interestingly adding that he believes an agreement’s “very close” (via C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic). Stearns said, “I firmly believe we are going to have baseball this season” (per Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel).

I don't get it. Just prorate the salaries and play 80 games or so with an expanded playoffs. Done. I vote Kaybli for MLB Moderator-in-Chief! Who’s with me! Let’s do it! First, we’ll organize a peaceful protest including laying on the highways and byways of America, volunteering to be made into road pizza. Then, we’ll set fire to our own homes and hit up all the new car dealerships, looting their cars into our garages...

After an MLBPA board meeting on Thursday, union head Tony Clark said, “The league’s demand for additional concessions was resoundingly rejected” (full statement here via Jeff Passan of ESPN.com). The players want to return to the field, but they’re simply not open to another pay cut, as Cardinals reliever Andrew Miller told Evan Drellich and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (subscription link). “Players are engaged like I’ve never seen before,” Miller said. “Every day through ths each of those factors is reinforced. We hope to be on the field as soon as possible.” 6:39pm: As the deadlock between the league and the Players Association continues, MLB Network’s Jon Heyman tweets that the 30 team owners are remaining “steadfast” in aiming to end the season by Nov. 1. Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick already firmly voiced earlier this week his stance that ownership’s model of not playing games in November “will never be changed.” what a mess

With everything that's come out, it's hard to support the owners in any of this, it really appears that they are using Covid 19 to try and make up for years of getting their buts kicked in labor negotiations with the players.

Ken Rosenthal and Evan Drellich of The Athletic report that more than 100 players met digitally Thursday and "reaffirmed virtually unanimous support" that they will not agree to a second reduction in pay.
The union already agreed in March to prorated salaries based on the number of games played and they appear to be drawing a line in the sand at not taking additional cuts. Meanwhile, the owners don't want to play any more than 50 games at the current financial agreement, believing they will continue to lose money the more games that are played. Commissioner Rob Manfred appears to have the power to set a schedule with the number of games of his choosing, and it's looking like it might come to that if neither side is willing to budge. Source: The Athletic I don't get what's so hard here? If my contract is for 162 million dollars a year (I know no one has this contract, but easy math) thats 1 million a game so if they played 50 games I would get 50 million, 100 games 100 million, 162 games 162 million. Why is this even being argued? It's not the players fault a virus broke and the owners won't get concession money/other things that help pay the salaries.

You have to wonder if the owners even want a season? Way to destroy the game, while other sports move ahead with continuing or starting their own seasons.

Many fans didn’t like Bud Selig, but I always thought he got things done. What say you? Would he have been in the same situation?

He was acting in that capacity while the owners did a six-year search for the job to replace the fired or rather resigned Faye Vincent. Selig did assist to avoid a work stoppage in 2002.
