Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac has died at the age of 79. She always seemed like the adult in the room with that group. Their first Top 40 US hit was one she wrote and sang lead on, "Over My Head," in 1975. Others she wrote included "Hold Me" and "Say You Love Me." I much preferred her sultry voice to the more melodramatic Stevie Nicks. Fleetwood Mac had to be one of the four or five most ubiquitous groups of the mid-to-late-70s. She won the surname lottery at birth as Christine Perfect, but changed it when she married John McVie. I'll never figure that one out. She was a good one. RIP Christine McVie. "Songbird" was another classic McVie song. She was great. Loved that voice, too.

"Oh Well" usually gets considered by critics to be the Peter Green piece de resistance, although it's not one of my favorites. Green did the original "Black Magic Woman" in 1968, two years before Santana turned it into a billion-seller. "Albatross" is a dreamlike instrumental that got some airplay. "Closing My Eyes" is another good one. They were a fairly prolific group, so there's lots to choose from. For some reason, I always sang that song as "I got a black magic marker." I still do that to this day. Some eight-year-old kid habits die hard. There used to be -- maybe still is -- a website dedicated to misheard lyrics, intentional or not, called "Scuse me while I kiss this guy" based on the Jimi Hendrix "Purple Haze" lyrics. Just like it's hard to hear "Bad Moon Rising" without thinking "there's a bathroom on the right." Another one I remember is The Rascals doing "Groovin'" as "life could be ecstasy, you and me and Lesley."

Never had that one in my collection. But it's a good one from 1970. Thanks for posting it.

Oh man, that was laugh out loud funny. The power of suggestion. Glad he cleared up Sister Sledge for me and turned Shania Twain into an XXX-rated singer.

I'm not a big Fleetwood Mac fan, although they are unique because there's been so many versions from the Bluesy Peter Green lead original to Bob Welch to the more popular Buckingham/Nicks version. Heck, Dave Mason was even briefly in Fleetwood Mac during Buckingham's hiatus.
A quick top five for me:
Rhiannon Monday Morning Landslide The Chain Oh Well (Peter Green Era)
My favorite Christie song is probably You Make Loving Fun. She was certainly very talented and brought some much needed balance to the group with some of her bandmates being so volatile and unreliable.

One of my all-time favorites was one of my school buddies groovin’ to Inagaddadavita (pardon leaving out the dashes). He was singing “In the garden of Eden, baby”… 😂

I'll go with those first three, plus Silver Spring and the aforementioned Songbird.

Getting back to Christie McVie, there's a song on one of her sole records, called "Got a Hold on Me" that's worth a listen and would have fit in well on one of those early 80's Fleetwood albums. We also heard Christie a lot this fall on Chevy commercial that featured Everywhere. RIP

I remember my buddy John laughing at himself for having thought that, and our music class all having good fun with him. It makes more sense that the In-A-Gadda stuff, which of course was nonsensical… Well, I learned something today, some 55 or so years after the episode. I wonder how many from that class learned before me, how many died not knowing. How many will live in without knowing…

Yea, I've only heard a few songs from that version of the group. Care to share any other favorites from that early version of the band? They had almost as many performers as USA For Africa (j/k.) There was also the talented but unstable Danny Kirwin in the early incarnation. Bob Welch was the guy behind "Hypnotized" before he had all that late 70s solo success with "Ebony Eyes" and "Sentimental Lady" and "Hot Love, Cold World." He was huge for a year or two.
