Here one for the background music, Pipps! Well now you are right up my alley Rizz. Great song. And what a life this guy lived. Thanks for this one.

On the subject of spoken lyrics, the acknowledged champion of old school R&B is the rather raw 1954 offering "The Letter" by Vernon Green and The Medallions. Not the same as the Box Tops "give me a ticket for an aeroplane" song of the same name. The whole speech sounds like something you make up as you go along after being awakened in the middle of the night, and includes a few words not seen in any dictionary, including "puppetus" which I believe Steve Miller stole for use in his song "The Joker" about twenty years later. Probably not worth two and a half minutes of your life, but I have the record and haul it out maybe once a year. www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQNGHMf15I4Miller bastardized “puppetutes” to pompetus… en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/PompatusBTW, Pipps, have you and the Mrs. seen the water dragon at Longwood Gardens yet? Brief but amusing story. I was called in to consult and to provide the propane for that project, which I ultimately did. About a quarter mile of gas line to adequately hide the tank. Biggest propane line I ever saw because of the massive BTUs required. Anyway, when the project was underway I was told that Steve Miller was a partial funder of the project and that I was to meet him on site. I’m not overly giggly about celebs, but okay. When I got there the site supervisor was indeed Steve Miller, but… not “that” Steve Miller. Nice enough guy and we worked splendidly together, but just another Steve Miller. The pompetus of sales…

And that's why people called him Maurice?

One of the all-time great spoken intros --"because of my obligations" -- another hit they had around that time was "You Are My Shining Star." Love The Manhattans -- they had wonderful songs going back to the mid-60s that didn't get as much mainstream airplay, like "I Wanna Be Your Lover And Your Friend." Another great spoken word soul soliloquy was the Chi-Lites sad recitation in "Have You Seen Her." "We laugh, tell a few jokes. But inside I'm a lonely man." Poor guy just breaks your heart. Hey we have Chi regular ( chiyankee ) on the board here, no need for the Chi-Lites. They're my back-up band.

Just found out that Bobby Caldwell died on March 14, 2023. If some of you do not know him, you'll likely know this song: Great song and essence of late 70s. I was shocked when I found out he was a white guy. He also wrote that big hit "The Next Time I Fall" that Amy Grant and Pete Cetera did that was all over MTV in the mid-80s. When we were living in Manhattan -- and we were really living, I want that life back -- in the early 00s, we saw him perform at a small club on 55th Street. He was doing a program of Sinatra music -- not impersonating, just interpreting -- and he was great. Until we got there and read the playbill, I had no idea he was the same guy who did "What You Won't Do For Love." Enormous talent, and I see in his bio he was friends in his youth with Bob Marley and played guitar in Little Richard's backing band in the 70s.

There is an enormous amount of construction going on there now -- the place is getting Disneyfied. I thought I knew every inch of Longwood, so I must have seen the Water Dragon without knowing what it was called. Although from the name it should be obvious. I'll be back over soon enough to check it out. Yeah, lots of Steve Millers out there. I knew one too, a photographer who died a few years ago. Now if I knew a Lars Nootbar who was not the baseball player, I'd have some bragging rights.

He was a cool cat in his 30s from Mississippi working on a master's degree. He didn't even bat an eye when I asked, like he was happy to have been asked. Very gracious. He always took time out of his studies to watch the Saints' games on television with the rest of us. He finished his degree that semester, and I never saw him again. I hit one good seven iron that day and was hooked on the game. Thank you to the pompetus of golf!

Now if I knew a Lars Nootbar who was not the baseball player, I'd have some bragging rights. I don’t know what they call the fountain, and I never got to see it fired up. I know it’s a water fountain that has flame coming from it, and I believe it was built as dragon. I was in on the technical portion to feed it, but never actually saw the design. I was more into the piping, BTU’s, tank sizing. If I recall the total potential with all flames on was 775,000 BTUs. They swore they would only use about 1/2 of that at one time. I finally did convince them to increase the tank size to provide proper evaporation …

They're my back-up band. I wonder who the business manager was… ? … The sombrero and mustache gag really attract the chiquitas, right Chi? (Watch him deny this because he’s married)… 🤓
