Great list Pipps. I'd add John Entwistle of the The Who, whose bass playing was so powerful that it seemed like at at times the band had a lead bassist. Most definitely Chi. It's on me that I neglected to mention him. Many rankings have him at the very top. Also Flea.

Upon learning that a friend had started taking bass lessons, the first friend asked: "What did you learn at you first bass lesson?" to which the new student answered:"I learned to play an 'A'". He was then asked: "What did you learn at your second lesson?" "I learned to play an 'E'". Finally he was asked: "What did you learn at the third lesson?" to which he replied,"I didn't go to the third lesson. I had a gig."

A hunter wanted to go big game hunting in virtually uncharted jungles in Africa. He hired a local village chief and some villagers to act as guides and porters. They set out the morning and began trekking through the thick jungle. After a few hours, they began to hear drums off in the distance. The porters were visibly disturbed by the sound, but they kept on going. The drums continued all through the first night and second day, getting louder and louder the deeper they went into the jungle. The drums continued through the second night and into the third day with the villagers getting increasingly agitated and visibly frightened. By noon the third day the volume and intensity of the drums increased so that by noon they had reached a thunderous crescendo. Then, they suddenly stopped. Silence ensued. As soon as the drums stopped, the porters dropped all their gear and began running and screaming back the way they had come, leaving only the hunter and village chief. The hunter turned to the chief and fearfully asked: "Why are they running away? Is it because the drums stopped? Is this bad?" The chief shook his head slowly and said: "This bad. Very, very bad. Next come bass solo."

Hey man, that's hilarious. I remember having those feelings in jazz clubs.

Way to many posts to even attempt to catch up BUT been a fan of John Eddie (Who The Hell Is John Eddie?) since 1985. Always doing local gigs around NJ but has not played since before Covid. Looking forward to his show Sunday Night at The Stone Pony.

I never made it…

Nice. Springsteen is a fan of John Eddie. Are you old enough to remember Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes?

Yes and Yes. My wife is from Freehold. The house Bruce grew up in was facing backyards with my late father-in-laws.

You need to keep a limit on that. Southside Johnny used to play a lot at a place in Newark Delaware called the Stone Balloon. My brother played there many times and was friends with the owner, a guy named Bill Stephenson. He was married to Jill Jacobs, who later divorced him and married a guy named Joe Biden. Not sure what became of her after that. But yeah, Southside Johnny had a great band.
