Here's a little "Jessica". The Toler Brothers are on rhythm guitar and drums and were two of the nicest guys you'd want to meet. They both died of cancer way too early in their lives. www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRE3Bv1goyI

Dickey Betts, influential Allman Brothers Band singer, songwriter and guitarist, dead at 80 Betts passed away Thursday morning in Florida.ByJill Lances via logo April 18, 2024, 12:10 PMRock and Roll Hall of Fame member as well as lead guitarist, singer and songwriter Dickey Betts dies at 80 years old. Dickey Betts, the influential singer, songwriter and guitarist for Southern rock legends the Allman Brothers Band, has died at age 80.
"It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the Betts family announce the peaceful passing of Forrest Richard 'Dickey' Betts (December 12, 1943 - April 18, 2024) at the age of 80 years old," reads a statement posted on Betts' official Instagram page. "The legendary performer, songwriter, bandleader and family patriarch passed away earlier today at his home in Osprey, FL., surrounded by his family."
“Dickey was larger than life, and his loss will be felt world-wide,” the statement continued. “At this difficult time, the family asks for prayers and respect for their privacy in the coming days.”
Betts co-founded Allman Brothers Band in 1969 along with brothers Duane and Gregg Allman, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks and Jaimoe Johanson, releasing their self-titled debut that year. They went on to become one of the pioneering Southern rock bands and were particularly known for their touring career, which included long shows filled with extended jams.
In addition to playing lead guitar in the band, Betts wrote and sang lead on several songs, including “Ramblin’ Man,” one of their only top-10 hits, and “Blue Sky." He also composed the band’s well-known instrumental tunes, including “Jessica” and “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.”
In a statement provided to ABC News by their publicist, the Allman Brothers Band said they greeted the news of Betts' passing "with deep sadness."
"His extraordinary guitar playing alongside guitarist Duane Allman created a unique dual guitar signature sound that became the signature sound of the genre known as Southern Rock," the statement continued, in part. "He was passionate in life, be it music, songwriting, fishing, hunting, boating, golf, karate or boxing. Dickey was all in on and excelled at anything that caught his attention."
"Betts joins his brothers, Duane Allman, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks and Gregg Allman, as well as ABB crew members Twiggs Lyndon, Joe Dan Petty, Red Dog, Kim Payne and Mike Callahan in that old Winnebago in the sky touring the world taking their music to all who will listen," the statement concluded. "Play on Brother Dickey, you will be forever remembered and deeply missed."
Over the years, the Allman Brothers Band went on hiatus, with Betts concentrating on other projects, including a solo career and forming other bands, including Great Southern; Betts, Hall, Leavell and Trucks; and the Dickey Betts Band. He was officially ousted from Allman Brothers Band in 2000 and never played with them again.
With Dickey’s death, 79-year-old drummer Jaimoe Johanson is the last living Allman Brothers co-founder. The Allman Brothers Band is my favorite of the so-called Southern Rock bands. Live at the Fillmore East is one of my top 10 favorite albums ever. I met Dickey when I was a bartender at several saloons in Manatee County, Florida. I don't think he ever had to pay for a drink, but not sure if he ever left me a tip, either. When he was sober, he a very pleasant southern gentleman, but when he was drinking........... I have a few Gregg Allman stories too, but those are for another time. I saw the Allman Brothers Band play at Penn State in 1970. They were still kind of a B-list group at that time -- I was only dimly aware of them, and "Whipping Post" was the only song of theirs that had gotten much radio play. That was about to change, of course, but at that time it was a cheap date -- they were just about to release their second album, which had "Midnight Rider" which they played at the concert. So without really knowing who he was (other than that "Rolling Stone" was raving about him), I saw Duane Allman and he was just astonishing. Mostly a Les Paul and some cheesy amps. They played about three hours and I don't think they even took a break. They just seemed like they were having fun. I later learned that they played over 300 gigs in that one year -- seems physically impossible, but it's sure a way to get known. Somehow amid all that Duane Allman found time to record with Derek and the Dominoes and even Eric Clapton was blown away. "Fillmore East" was still in the future at that time. Probably my favorite Southern Rock Band is Atlanta Rhythm Section, but the Allmans are up there too. Does ZZ Top count as Southern Rock? If so, they're in the running as well. I usually have Texas as a separate category. I liked The Outlaws too. And Wet Willie gets a plenary indulgence for "Keep On Smiling." Also .38 Special I liked. Little Feat, Dixie Dregs, Molly Hatchet, Skynyrd, they all left a mark. Not a fan of Marshall Tucker or The Doobies or especially Black Oak Arkansas. But to each his own, we all have different buttons to push.

When I was a still a wet behind the ears youth, I had a Triumph motorcyle. I had painted on the side of the tank in small script "Pony Boy". Hey man, how was the trip to Carmel? And did you find your Branzino? It was a great trip. Short 3 day 2 nighter. I did not find Branzino. The first night we went to a nice restaurant right on Ocean Avenue that we always wanted to try. We did a late lunch early dinner after I took the dog to the beach and my wife went shopping. Was in the mood for a burger and it was great. The second evening we made reservations at a highly rated Italian place that we had been to previously. They have great pizza but we wanted to try somthing different. I stayed with the red meat theme and ordered a strip steak and my wife had cannelloni. It was one of the most dissapointing meals I have ever had. Not sure what cut the steak was but it was unlike any strip I've ever had. Meat was both fatty and tough. The cannelloni was very bland. I rarely send food back, and I didn't this time but I should have. The steak was priced at over $50. That was the only negative. We had great weather, my wife enjoyed herself and I had a blast watching my dog on the beach. As soon as he realized he was off leash he went nuts. Playing with other dogs and just saying hello to everyone. There is a Michelin Star French restaurant we have been to in the past. We were planning to go there but unfortunately they closed their patio so dogs are no longer allowed in the restaurant. He enjoys eating out so much I couldn't dine without him.

Will catch up soon though. Its been pretty good so far though a little short of my favorite TV shows. Maybe it will be there by the time its over. I was disappointed to learn that's its a miniseries that will have no season 2. At least we'll get closure.
