Well if two musically knowledgeable guys like Inger and Renfield are okay with Jim Stafford, then I'm the one who has it wrong. I'll have to give another listen to Spiders and Snakes. For whatever reason I associate that song with "Chick A Boom" by Daddy Dewdrop. It must have been a twin-spin one time on the local radio station.

Jim Stafford was a heck of a guitar player, but he was more comedian than balladeer. I think of him as an artist of gimmick songs, but his musical talent was evident. He could pick it.

I was watching an old video of Clapton singing “Layla” a couple days ago. There in the back pounding the drums was a young Phil Collins. And he had hair! …

Another thing similar to Roy Clark… Glen Campbell could also pick it and believe he was a studio musician early in his career. 55, not only was Glen Campbell a studio musician, as part of the LA-based "Wrecking Crew" he was one of the most in-demand session guitarists. Just off the top of my head some songs I can think of where he was playing guitar -- "You've Lost That Lovin Feeling" by The Righteous Brothers; "Viva Las Vegas" by Elvis; "Strangers In The Night" by Frank Sinatra; "Hello Mary Lou" by Rick Nelson (although James Burton played a lot of leads for Rick too); "Surf City" by Jan and Dean; "Hey Little Cobra" by The Rip Chords; several hits by The Monkees including "I'm A Believer" and "Mary Mary"; a lot of Beach Boys hits like "I Get Around" and "Dance Dance Dance" and "Fun Fun Fun" (Carl Wilson obviously could play all of those leads himself and did so in concert, but Brian wanted him focused on vocals in the studio.) Others were "Rhythm Of The Rain" by The Cascades, the instrumental "Out Of Limits" by The Marketts (which was really just The Wrecking Crew); "Mama Tried" by Merle Haggard; "I Am A Rock" by Simon and Garfunkel; plus of course all of his own stuff. Glen once said that when he listened to the oldies station that he was playing on one out of every three records. He was an incredible talent. He could fingerpick and flatpick like his role model Chet Atkins. Except Glen also had a great voice. Definitely one of my all-time favorite musicians of the rock era.

Another thing similar to Roy Clark… Roy Clark was great, one of my favorites.
My favorite guitar player now is Luca Stricagnoli, I first heard him play "The Last of the Mohicans." I have been a fan of his ever since. Amazing how he can play 2 guitars at once when he played "Bitter Sweet Symphony."
