OK, need some help here. Have you ever listened to a musical groups and you can't make up your mind if they are good or not? For me it might be ELO. A buddy of mine is a fan and while I didn't listen to them much in their heyday he convinced me to give them a listen. I'm a fan of Jeff Lynne, like the Traveling Willbury stuff, recognize he's a good producer but just can't make up my mind about ELO. To me sometimes they sound like a cross beween the Beatles and the Bee Gees.

Whether they are good, I'll leave up to the individual listener., although I think Jeff Lynne is an amazing talent. John Lennon did once joke that ELO did the Beatles better than the Beatles did.

To me sometimes they sound like a cross beween the Beatles and the Bee Gees. Hey 55, I'm a big ELO fan for sure. I was into Jeff Lynne's work even before ELO when he was with The Move in the early 70s; it clearly foreshadowed his later music. A cross between The Beatles and The Bee Gees is a pretty good place to be in my book. Although I guess I thought of them more as a cross between Late Beatles and Early Beethoven! But I understand what you're saying about making up your mind about the value of any particular artist. I was late to convert to Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin (when I say late I mean maybe a year or so after they hit the airwaves) to give three legendary examples, but once I was in I was all in. Because I was already a fan of The Move, ELO just seemed like taking it to the next level. To me, songs like "Can't Get It Out Of My Head" and "Telephone Line" were just so innovative with the use of strings and inventive harmonies. I figure any guy who has the respect of George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty must be something special. Thanks for opening up another interesting discussion.

Concur on all counts Chi. I didn't have an older sibling, but I did have a musically obsessed Aunt who was seven years older than me who essentially had that same influence as your brother. Which is why I have always been at home with music from my early childhood like Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly and Little Richard and The Everly Brothers and Bo Diddley and of course Elvis. We're both lucky to have had that experience.
