Cool stuff, pipps! Pipps, the radio DJ! I would have listened to your show for sure! You would have been one of the few. But seriously, as some friends who really did work in radio for a living told me, your audience will find you. When satellite radio started up, there were at least attempts to vary the content from the monotony of broadcast stations. But soon it became obvious that they had simply come up with a slightly different formula that was inly marginally less repetitive. I was only on for three hours a week, but I would never repeat a song within a minimum of six months. There are millions of recordings out there. Why not let people hear what you believe are good ones? I used to love it when people would tell me they hadn't heard that song in 25 years, or that they had never heard it before but liked it. Well now pipps you owe us a top ten or at least top five list of your favorite songs being the radio DJ that you are!

Sad, isn't it? These guys are just churning out widgets. As for libations-- is it that obvious I have been imbibing? Yikes. Seriously, I am all over the map, depending on where I am and the time of year. I love good bourbons and classic cocktails-- stuff my grandfather would drink like martinis and manhattans. It's great how the revival of interest in mixology has brought back historic drinks like the sazarac and the sidecar. My go-to at home is gin and tonic (Hendricks if you have it barkeep.) Put me in Germany and I'm drinking beer. Local wines anywhere. Right now I am in the south of France and the people here are throwing down the Cote de Provence wines, which believe it or not are 90 percent rose. I normally consider rose wines to be on a par with Kool Aid, but the stuff they have here matches perfectly with the local cuisine. Go with the flow. Just try to hold off until at least noon. What are your drinks of choice, Rizz?

I would have a hard time boiling it down to 500, let alone five. Like most people of my age group, I loved The Beatles, Stones, Beach Boys, Motown, etc. But I almost never played that music on my show (other than lesser-heard stuff) because back then you could hear it anywhere. If I told you my five favorite Beatles songs and you asked me again in a month, I would probably name five different songs. I think it's great that you know so much about the old stuff. Most people, me included, always have the strongest emotional attachment to the songs they grew up with.

Members of Chumbawumba or whatever used to be members of a commie punk band called CRASS... BOO!!! I had a literal hatred of them as a teenager... which is funny looking back because CRASS hadn't been a band since before I was born.

They like current pop music like Imagine Dragons and Panic at the Disco. I’ve started putting on the SiriusXM pop station in the car. It isn’t my favorite music but I think it matters more that they are enjoining music at all. They listen to my music at home and in the car most of the time. We have Miles playing this morning with the fire going and they actually seem to dig it so it’s all good. Miles is better than Miley (Cyrus) at least! I actually loved Miley Cyrus covering Jolene...

Thanks man. Being totally humble... those recordings were horrible lol. We had another set of recordings that are much better, quality wise. Had a lot of fun being in a band.. played Philly a few times... And reaped the benefits of being in a band a couple times as well lol

Mostly basements in west Philly... but the biggest place we played was some dive bar off South Street by the Troc... used to go to a lot of shows at the Troc as a teen

What are your drinks of choice, Rizz? About ten years ago, I began to feel ill effects after only a couple drinks, sometimes even a single one - so I rarely imbibe these days. Even so, I always was a social drinker and never had/have any impulse to drink alone. What you’ve described about your habits and tastes mirror mine (or did) perfectly. Cocktails, especially those with local history, flavor or ingredients, were of great interest. Can you go to Key West without trying a Papa Doble? A sazarac in New Orleans? A mojito in Cuba? Irish coffee in San Francisco? I embrace the idea of “Think globally, drink locally.” Sarah and I so used to enjoy driving and sampling local wineries and pairing with local dishes/cuisine. Amazingly, my usual was also a gin and tonic (Bombay Sapphire). Just thought of a memory of me making Aviation Cocktails for Sarah and her best friend on a perfect evening in California. Good times!

Nice essay on cocktails Rizz. I enjoy drinking and abhor drunkenness. Thanks for mentioning the Aviation, a connoisseur's drink that was fortunately exhumed from the cocktail cemetery 15 or 20 years ago.
I have a small collection of vintage cocktail books, and it's interesting to follow how tastes change over the years. The original Martini was 50-50 gin and vermouth, something most people would find undrinkable these days. Winston Churchill, definitely in the drinking Hall of Fame, said something along the lines of only nodding toward a bottle of vermouth when he made his Martini.
I don't want to hijack the music thread any further. Maybe we should start an alcohol thread. Then again, maybe not.
