I cannot blame Rothschild for Gray’s 7.32 ERA at home, unless I credit Rothschild for Sonny’s 3.09 ERA on the road. Whether it was right or wrong, Sonny called out the Yankees pitching staff for trying to change his pitching style:

I’ve heard the excuses, I just don’t buy them. I also recall reading that statcast didn’t bear out Gray’s over-reliance on the slider with the Yankees as opposed to after he was traded. The difference was he was no longer pitching half his games at Yankee stadium. If it were true, why did the sliders work on the road? Makes no sense to me. |

Yea I think it was a little of both. Larry Rothschild did him no favors. I cannot blame Rothschild for Gray’s 7.32 ERA at home, unless I credit Rothschild for Sonny’s 3.09 ERA on the road. It was Rothschild that changed they way Gray pitched and it didn't work. They could have at least tried to work him with some one else before they gave him away for nothing. They should have canned Larry several years before they finally did. |
