I guess when play resumes we’ll have a new pitcher. Shame, Monty was ofc to such a good start. It wood have been good to see him work his way out of this inning, but I wouldn’t chance using him now...
The forecast I’m seeing shows the rain out of there sometime around 10:00-10-30... so the game should get played...

And, he doesn’t have five innings to be considered for the win.

To be fair to Torres, he’s still young. To be fair to the Yankees, there is really no where else to play him right now. Torres could continue to improve. If not, he’ll be DJ’s replacement in a few more seasons. I never really saw Torres as an MLB SS. He’s a bit too bulky through the shoulders for me to believe in him as one. Right now, he’s also to prone to try to make a play when the ball should be held, or go for the DP when a slow but sure approach makes more sense. His is not a head made for the position. That’s the one thing Jeter certainly had...oh, my goodness. I am still amazed at the shovel toss to Posada to catch little Giambi trying to score. Probably the smartest, most baseball-aware play I have ever seen.

There are arguments to be made whether or not the throw was on line enough and gets there sooner if Jeter never touches that ball, but my bet is Jeter made the play. If it wound up an inch or two more towards the stands, Giambi could have been in safe...

He is young, but that’s two plays in four innings that he should have made; two extra outs Monty has to cover up, and the last one scored a run when the inning should have been over. When it hits you in the glove, it should be caught.

Granted, I was not there and camera angles can be deceiving, but it clearly looks to me that it needed the re-direction of the Jeter toss. As another point, how many shortstops have you ever seen in a position to make that play?

Jeter caught the ball just above his left knee. Shane Spencer overthrew two cut off men. No artificial turf in Oakland - real grass, real dirt above real ground.

As another point, how many shortstops have you ever seen in a position to make that play? Lol. I understood him being there only too well. I usually played centerfield, but when the ball was hit to another outfielder and I couldn’t get there to back him up, the first thing I did was run toward the spot I imagined may need a backup for a throw. I’d often be involved in rundowns in the infield, make tags at otherwise unmanned bases, etc.. if three fielders were converging on a pop up into a strange place I would usually be the one that emerged with it. I could just see angles on fly balls that other guys couldn’t, the same with what was happening on the bases, who was fast, who would take a risk, etc.. But you’re right. Jeter has that instinct (that’s the only word I can think of to fit it). I could never understand it myself, but I had that game awareness in the field. It made up for any deficit in talent I had, and i was thankful for having it. My feeling is that every player should be moving until the play was finished, and aware of what to do. That was a weakness sometimes, because I’d get vocal about lazy team mates...

We’ve discussed that play many times on this very site. There were some I won’t name (because I may not remember who) that were in firm disagreement...

What is inarguably true is that Jeter put that ball in the absolute best spot possible to allow Posada to place that tag...
