Boone should operate his bullpen as if he still has Betances and Kahnle, except they are named Schmidt and Nelson. If not, then indeed, why are they at the major league level. He also should allow starters to throw 100 to 110 pitches, let them work their way out of trouble and pitch into the sixth and seventh innings, unless they have completely lost the strike zone. Guys like Cessa and Yajure should be used as long men. Cole, Tanaka, Garcia, Happ, and Monty are your five starters. Monty could have pitched through the fourth inning today. Tanaka could have pitched through the sixth yesterday. Garcia could have pitched through the fifth two games prior to that. Totally agree with you Rizz. Boone's quick hook on his starters always backfires. And, having starters throw fewer than 100 pitches has not helped Paxton or Loaisiga or Severino or Montgomery or Sabathia to stay healthy.

Whether it's babying pitchers arms by reducing pitching counts or the analytical geeks showing how badly starting pitchers fare when going through a lineup for a third time, starters are pitching less and relievers more. I don't think it's good for the game at all but that's where we are. That said, with starters pitching fewer innings, you would think that it would be easier for Boone to keep his relievers on a consistent appearance schedule, since there is more available innings, but that hasn't been the case either.
