Basically it seeds by Division Winners then division second places, then wild cards. One cannot pass the other only one of in the like category can pass the other.
Therefore is the twins hold on they go above the White Sox by a half game into the division lead. This drops the White Sox into the 2nd Placer Division group which they would lead by 2 full games over the yankees and have the tiebreaker.
The Astros cannot go any higher because they have 28 losses and the Yankees can max out at 28 if they lose out, but the Tie breaker is division record which the astros are 18-18 and the Yankees are 23-16 so the yankees cannot get to 18 losses.
The only other "2nd" place team that can knock the yankees out of the 5th seed is the Blue Jays, but they are 3 full behind the yankees with 4 left and the Yankees have the tiebreaker so the only way the Yankees can be caught there is if the Yankees lose out and the Blue Jays win out. Even then they would both have 17 division losses and it would go to record in the division over the last 20 games which I think the Yankees have that tiebreaker, because of the 10th game losing streak.
If the Indians passed the White Sox then the White Sox would fall to 7th.

We have to be having one of the least consistent seasons in MLB history... Look at how many different lineups they have had.

Basically tomorrow is a big one for the Yankees they would pretty lock up the 5 seed at worst with a win tomorrow, because that would put the Blue Jays at 28 losses and 18 division losses two numbers the Yankees can't reach with a win. They would also win the season series 6-4. As said earlier the Astros can't pass them and the lower seed of the Indians/White Sox/Twins is locked in the WC.

Kaybli I think we read the rules wrong. The yankees can't fall out of the 5th seed unless the Blue Jays catch them which is very unlikely. No matter if the Indians wind up with the better record or not they can't pass the Yankees. Yea I knew that. The second seed in the AL East means the third seed in the AL Central can't pass you no matter the record. The Yankees better shape up though. We can't have sloppy performances like we've had today in the playoffs. Hopefully, its just a wacky Buffalo thing.
