Definitely untrue. Much easier to hide a liability in the outfield than first base, simply by virtue of the number of outs and plays the first baseman will be involved in during the course of a game. You can’t necessarily take intentional advantage of a poor outfielder, like you can with the bunt, steal, grounder, or large secondary lead with a poor first baseman. Also, in my opinion, I’ve seen many, many more great defensive outfielders than great defensive first basemen. Most first baseman are merely serviceable. Not many rise to the level of excellence of Keith Hernandez and Don Mattingly for some reason. Nearly every MLB team has at least one excellent outfielder. Judge, Gardner, Hicks, Tauchman, now even Frazier are all above average defensively. Judge is excellent in my opinion. Gardner in his prime was certainly excellent. You know me when it comes to defense. I want it everywhere. I’ll take a bit less bat to get it... somehow most teams don’t get built that way... As the saying goes, “Chicks dig the long ball” not the scoop or pick.

As the saying goes, “Chicks dig the long ball” not the scoop or pick. Yep. There’s nothing like being able to do both equal aplomb. I personally think we sacrifice too much defense at first base for the offense he gives us. Yet, I do like the guy. Plus having 30 teams... it’s like you said, few first basemen rise to the top. The position has belonged more to the Luke Voit’s of the world for decades. I’d surely prefer that every position be filled by someone who is considered one of the top 6-9 (20%-30%) of the best fielders and that from those 20-30% of the fielders with the best bat one can find among them. It’s hard to figure who fits the description, but if you’re the GM of a MLB team with an army of baseball people around you, you should have that knowledge. Instead it seems all teams take the easy way out and wants to collect the best 20-30% of the bats, and then look for the best fielding among them. It’s backwards, but it is what it is. What good is an RBI if a poor fielder gives that run back. There are a few exceptions. I think teams will search the best defensive men for SS, CF, and now C. Progress has been made. There is a way to go. I think it’s safe to say that Torres is not in danger of winning a gold glove at SS any time soon. But the Yankees are mesmerized by his bat. Also by the comeback possibilities of Sanchez. We could benefit by better fielding at both positions...

Another day, another game not televised or archived to watch. Jordan Montgomery became the first Yankee pitcher to complete five innings in his start today against Toronto. The port-sider was also the most efficient starter thus far as well, needing only 66 pitches for the “official” win 1-0. The Yankees managed five hits: two by Judge, two by Stanton, and one from Dietrich. Judge scored the only run on a ground ball out from Gleyber Torres.
In another reason to complain about these non-televised games, none of us probably realized that Gio Urshela started yesterday’s game against Detroit at shortstop. Evidently, the Yankees wanted to see if Urshela could handle the position if needed in an emergency. This may be another sign that the Yankees don’t want to lose Bruce or Tauchman, entertaining the idea of having Wade stashed at the alternative site or AAA until needed. Or, they just may be using Spring Training to familiarize players with possible scenarios over the course of a 162 game season.

Another note: Lucas Luetge struck out two more batters in 1.1 innings, giving up two hits, no walks, no runs. He now has 13 strikeouts in 6.1 innings pitched.

Do the Yankees keep 13 position players and 13 pitchers? Or, 14 and 12?

Do the Yankees keep 13 position players and 13 pitchers? Or, 14 and 12? Boonie is already on record that he wants 13 pitchers. 8 man bullpen.

NYY news: Long ago LOOGY Luetge looms. I think he's going to make the team, at least until Britton comes back.

Yankees lost to the Orioles today 2-1. Michael “The Falafel” King got the start and his line was solid: 4 innings, 2 hits, 1 run, 1 earned run, 1 walk, and 6 strikeouts. Jonathan “How Good Am I Really” Loaisiga took the loss, pitching 2 innings, 2 hits, 1 run, 0 walks, 1 strikeout. Unfortunately, one of the hits was a home run that was the difference in the game. Luis “You Just Can’t Cut Me” Cessa pitched the final 2 frames, with only 1 hit, 1 walk, and 3 strikeouts.
The Yankees bats have fallen silent lately, the Bombers managing only 3 hits against Baltimore: LeMahieu, Dietrich, and Urshela, who hit his first home run of the Spring. Even LeMahieu and Torres, after a hot start, have their batting averages in the .260s. Torres had the lone base on balls for the Yankees. The pitching remains solid in all phases, even though the bats are limp.
Side Note: Former Mets star, Matt Harvey started for the Birds, tossing 4 innings, allowing only 1 run - the Urshela dinger.

Yanks up 4-0 and still batting in the first. Voit, Frazier and Dietrich with RBI hits. Nice 9 pitch at bat by Cashman's guy that resulted in a walk.
