Seriously. Every one gets on him but he's really quite lucid for 82. The great radio voice never leaves, he's just a little slower, which is understandable. Not that they were announcers, but Clint Eastwood’s once commanding voice and Kris Kristofferson’s voice are horribly distorted now. Kris can’t sing at all. Sterling is just very gifted to still have a voice like he does...

Yankees beat the Tigers. Cole gave up a couple HRs but Frazier and Urshela went 5-5. FWIW, thats 7 straight spring training wins and we sit at 11-4, first in the Grapefruit League.

Yankees beat Detroit 7-4. Again, the game wasn’t televised . Frazier had a nice afternoon, with a home run and a couple singles. Tauchman hit a homer, too. Josh Breaux, another catcher in waiting, had two walks in two plate appearances. Urshela had two hits and a walk. Cole Slaw was a little heavy on the mayonnaise, giving up a couple of homers and 61 pitches in 3.2 innings. He’s got a 4.70 ERA so far this Spring, but is a historically slow starter each season. He also struck out five, which is a good sign. Loaisiga relieved Cole and walked the first batter, but still hasn’t given up a run during the Spring. He finished with two walks and two strikeouts in 2.1 innings. The last position player on the roster seems to be coming down to either Jay Bruce or Mike Tauchman. Not an easy decision, as Tauchman is out of options, I believe? If I recall, Bruce signed a minor league contract but has an opt out should he not make the MLB roster. Either of those two who doesn’t make the 26-man roster will likely be picked up by another team.

Weird that there's no televised game until Monday, a week gap.

No kidding, and I pay MLB.COM to be able to watch Yankees’ Spring Training games. Is this somehow COVID related?

In this battle for the final outfield spot... it’s pretty obvious that Jay Bruce has out-played Tauchman. I still prefer the utilitarian package Tauchman gives us better. He’s about four years younger. I’d turn Bruce loose to find greener pastures. It’s a fantasy to believe he’s going to return to his youthful skill set once the aches and pains of 2020 set in.
Tauchman is more likely to show his power of 2019 than Bruce is to become young again... 😂

It’s so easy for a baseball player to do something great for a kid. “Here’s a baseball worth several dollars. Even though I didn’t pay for it I will now appear to be very sweet and generous by tossing it to you, which we do all the time as a promotional gesture”. Now, let’s say it was me walking by her. “Here’s an ink pen that might be worth a buck. I always nabbed a few dozen extra when I went to our regional meetings so I wouldn’t run out, so I didn’t pay for them. I’ll look like a cheap skate when I give you one. Especially since I haven’t been to a regional meeting since I quit working there three years ago. It’s probably dried up. Besides, as a teenager in 2021, do this even know to write with an ink pen”?

Tauchman is more likely to show his power of 2019 than Bruce is to become young again... 😂 It’s not the final outfield spot, per se, as Bruce would also replace Mike Ford, which is another reason to keep him over Tauchman. Bruce is far more likely to show power than Tauchman, especially with the new baseball. Bruce at 33 has 318 career homers; Tauchman at 30 has 13 (all in 2019). One reason to keep Tauchman is speed. Having Gardner, Wade, and Tauchman on the bench is definitely a plus when stealing a base or scoring from second late in a game is needed. Tauchman is also more likely to work a walk. Left handed power off the bench is perfectly suited to Bruce. Also, since neither are to be regular players, I doubt aches and pains will make a difference picking between them. Gardner has been the oldest position player on the roster for a few years and has been healthier than Andujar, Judge, Stanton, Hicks, Voit, Sanchez, Urshela, even Frazier with his concussions and Torres with his quad injury last season. Heck, Tauchman missed like eight weeks with a calf strain in 2019, essentially all of September and the playoffs. Tanaka, even with age and an existing UCL tear, was more available than younger pitchers like Severino and Montgomery and Taillon. Bruce is finally healthy and likely to stay that way pinch hitting with the occasional start at first base. Another reason to believe Bruce is ahead for the last bench spot is Gardner has been getting reps in right field lately. Tauchman has not been approached about first base, though he said in February that he was amenable and had played some there in college. Unless Dietrich or Ford starts raking, Bruce and Tauchman will go down to the wire for the final spot.

I like them all in their own way. We can still have DJ slip over to first base as well. I hated playing first base myself, because I always though a monkey could play there. Yet, I know that to be untrue. It’s a specialized set of skills. The one most unpleasant test for me was that damned ball headed straight for my ankles... diving, leaping, that was never a problem. Don’t throw at my ankles, you idiot! It wasn’t thatvI couldn’t catch it. I just didn’t like it...

Much easier to hide a liability in the outfield than first base, simply by virtue of the number of outs and plays the first baseman will be involved in during the course of a game. You can’t necessarily take intentional advantage of a poor outfielder, like you can with the bunt, steal, grounder, or large secondary lead with a poor first baseman. Also, in my opinion, I’ve seen many, many more great defensive outfielders than great defensive first basemen. Most first baseman are merely serviceable. Not many rise to the level of excellence of Keith Hernandez and Don Mattingly for some reason. Nearly every MLB team has at least one excellent outfielder. Judge, Gardner, Hicks, Tauchman, now even Frazier are all above average defensively. Judge is excellent in my opinion. Gardner in his prime was certainly excellent.

You know me when it comes to defense. I want it everywhere. I’ll take a bit less bat to get it... somehow most teams don’t get built that way...
