Nice job remembering his name at LSU! Coach Skip Bertman kicked him off the team before the college playoffs. Bertman had rules, and they applied to everyone. My buddy from LSU (the English professor who gave me Confederacy of Dunces) hated all athletics, but he said every player from Skip’s teams attended class on time, removed their caps as soon as the entered the classroom, and asked for their assignments before leaving on a road trip. He didn’t have good things to say about Dale Brown or any of the football coaches. I think he was still going by Joey when he first came to the majors. Not Mr. Personality in my recollection. Hot head and probably steroid abuse. |

Neither did Bonds, Sosa, McGuire, Palmeiro, Manny Ramirez, Clemens, ARod, Cano, etc. They cheated themselves and the game and those sacred numbers that every boy shuffling through baseball cards knew by heart. |
