Did Rizzuto decide to go to the game tonight? No, alas, I was on the telephone tonight with my brother, then my father in law. That took up the entire game. I’ve lost games to family phone calls before. It’s okay. The Yankees may be here forever. Family not so much...I’ll take the family calls every time...

No, alas, I was on the telephone tonight with my brother, then my father in law. That took up the entire game. I’ve lost games to family phone calls before. It’s okay. The Yankees may be here forever. Family not so much...I’ll take the family calls every time... As Spanky from the Little Rascals so eloquently stated, “You said a mouthful.” My father-in-law has two sons who never see him and don’t speak to him, for no discernible reason. Sarah and I were close to both of her parents. We always included them wherever we went and spent as many holidays together as possible. They were always welcome in our home, anytime and for as long as they liked. Sarah’s mother died in 2010, and I performed the eulogy. Her dad and I speak regularly, at least twice per month. Sarah loved her parents and was a joy to them both. I know she would want me to stay close to him.

Just for the record, I might not be on the game threads much for the next week and a half. We leave tomorrow for a horses and bourbon trek in Kentucky, via The Greenbrier in West Virginia. But I will for sure be checking in. We're also visiting the Hillerich and Bradsby facility in Louisville for the factory tour. I've been there a few times in the past but it was before they gave factory tours. I did get to swing a Honus Wagner bat. It was like a miniature telephone pole. Anyway it should be fun. Lots of horse farms and distilleries, plus a bit of spelunking at Mammoth Cave. It's a beautiful part of the country. You really are that guy:

If you can find the time... We went to the Natural Bridge in Slade, KY. When we got there I was thrilled to find the Reptile Zoo. The Natural Bridge was one of those “okay, you’re impressive” sights. You could catch a glimpse of the cars passing several hundred feet overhead. Done. Now, let’s check out the snakes! When I was there they were billed as the largest collection of poisonous snakes in the world. If it’s poisonous, they have it. Protocol was for your very knowledgeable guide to knock before opening one of several exhibit houses in case someone was in the process of milking a snake. They do experimentation and sell the venom for anti-venoms throughout the world. I saw an anaconda that was something like 22 feet long, but that snake may not be there any more as they now bill an 18- foot reticulated python as the largest resident. There are other reptiles there, and not all creatures there are poisonous, but even my ex had to confess the display was interesting. I believe they had this shut down at one point during COVID, so a call ahead might be wise. I believe they open in late morning or afternoon so that most of the “snakes out” work is completed before visitors arrive. Anyway, I’ve never had a better reptile experience in my life, and would go again if the opportunity arose... My father was stationed in the Philippines during WWII. While setting up radio equipment in palm trees, a 25 foot anaconda was hunting him and two other servicemen. My father shot it with an M1 Carbine. He said he was shaking so much he missed the first shot from only a few feet away.

That said a standard snake is not capable of squeezing the Breath out of my body and consuming me in one slow slimey bite I believe I might have missed a few skabiliion shots befor making a kill shot that day, too...

Just a few comments after watching the condensed game: Gardner still plays a heck of a centerfield and is noticeably better than Hicks defensively. Andujar is looking better at the plate and in left field. Nothing spectacular or even above average, just serviceable. Taillon just doesn’t have the breaking stuff to offset the inconsistency of his fastball command. I’ve said this previously, but I think his stuff would play better in the bullpen this season. If Luis Severino is right, that could be a big upgrade to the rotation in the second half.

I think the team overall is basically coming together even if there haven't been many 10 run outbursts etc, but they've been winning a lot more than losing. Just obviously would like them to break free in the standings a bit.

Gardner can still cover the ground. Every time I have been ready to DFA him over the past few years he seems to rally. Even in the beginning days when he was the flyswatter, Gardner had a way of bringing something to every game he played. He’s just a ball player, that’s what he is. Give me 9 Gardners and I’m pretty sure the team is going to finish in last place, but it will never be for lack of effort, and the opposing team won’t score many cheap runs...

Gardner's instincts and reads in CF are so much better than Hicks. He's already made a couple of plays that I don't think Cashman's Guy would get to.

Now that Hicks arm is no longer superior, I’d rather see him pushed to LF... that might rupture his ego, but he’s already become a placeholder in the Yankees OF...
