Damon Oppenheimer Gives Thoughts On 2021 Draft Class“Early in the draft, it is completely about taking the best available player,” said Oppenheimer. “We’re going to have logjams. Anthony Volpe is going to be a logjam at shortstop for a lot of people. That’s the situation you just can’t stop in the amateur world. You are not trying to take somebody because you are short on a position or you have too many, you don’t want to take a guy, you are going to get yourself in trouble. Sweeney was the best guy we thought at the time. Even though you have a Volpe coming, you still make that pick.” “We really see him [Sweeney] as being able to play shortstop. I am not sure why that would be written about him. He’s smooth, he’s got good hands, he runs well enough, his range is good, and he has a plus arm. Realistically, he has all the tools and intangibles to be a shortstop. We don’t see any issues why he wouldn’t stay there.” As for the Yankees’ 2nd Round pick, they selected right-handed pitcher Brendan Beck out of Stanford and the organization believes that Beck is not far away from making it to the Bronx: “We think he could be really close. There’s not a lot that has to happen with him. There’s not a lot of development that has to go in. He just probably needs to build up innings. He’s really athletic, he throws strikes, he has four pitches…He can pitch to a scouting report. We think we have a guy that has four pitches, has command, and is athletic. We think we are getting a high-end starter.” www.pinstripedprospects.com/damon-oppenheimer-gives-thoughts-on-2021-draft-class-60797/

Good Grief. Seriously, what is happening (and has happened) to the Yankees? Of course it's a crap shoot, but the Yankees have been outshot so consistently that why should we expect this group to be any better. I couldn't believe the Yanks didn't take the best pitcher still on the board in the first round. This organization is looking clownish to serious fans like myself. Someone make it stop. Hate to agree but do. Not sure what has happened to this franchise, but I have a feeling it is with Jeter, cough cough. Wouldn't mind our old manager back, yeah things are that bad.

Jim Callis almost wrote something positive about the Yankees. That’s a first.

This 2021 edition is the worst since the CBS Yankees, and even then those teams played hard, usually smart baseball, and were just woefully out-manned. I would watch those guys any time over this bunch. Sorry to be such a sourpuss about this team, but things are dismal, and I have no hope of them getting better under present ownership/management.

As far as the draft goes, I don’t follow these college nor high school kids, so they’re just meaningless names to me. I had faith a few years ago that the Yankees were out-gunning everyone else in scouting. We had more inside information. We were delving into the personalities, Wonderlic tests. Only the best physically and emotionally were going to be Yankees.
Sadly, it seems they’ve outsmarted themselves. Looking for athletes, not ball players. Hoping for lottery tickets. So. I wind up wondering if this is just more of the same. Put two dollars down on Aunt Sally’s birthday and see if it hits…

Nothing to be sorry about Billy. All opinions welcome. Many of us feel the same way you do anyway.

I won't make it through another lockdown though! lol Not much into sports these days, seems that way across the board if you look at the ratings. I get the feeling what we are seeing with our team comes down to the manager. Speaking of, what did Boston do from last year to this year? Hope you are doing well.

Depending on where we finish, we might see a new manager. It is much easier to blame 1 person than an entire team. If the manager is truly not responsible and it is the collection of talent (i.e. bad mix, too HR heavy, etc.) then we need to fix that, but I can't imagine the manager staying through that. Personally I'm just hoping to bring some grit back. The team should fit the city. (cough Joe Judge cough )

I wind up wondering if this is just more of the same. Put two dollars down on Aunt Sally’s birthday and see if it hits… MLB draft is so tricky to figure out, given that owners have completely shut down any financial incentives to throw at draft picks outside the 1st round or two. You just are not going to get to tap into the level of top tier talent unless you are in the top 10 picks and the Yanks haven't been since what, Jeter at #6 in early 90s. They started to hum a little bit under Denbo a few years ago from a developmental program standpoint, but then Jeter took him to Miami. It does seem like the Yankees have hit the last few years with guys like Volpe, Sanford, Breaux, Waldichuck, Wells, Hauver. Lets see how they rise over the next 12-24 months as they hit high-A, and AA. But all signs point to some significant caliber of ballplayers in that group. Very intrigued with Beck the 2nd rounder SP this year. Every report seems to mention that he can move and move quickly, and I bet his velo is gonna uptick under the Yankees new pitching program. Of course with the yanks luck, his velo ticks up and then he hits the IL.

Shockingly, his agent, Scott Boras, spins a different tale.
