The Stump Merrill Era. Kevin Maas and Pat Kelly were the young hopefuls. My college days, when the Yankees were terrible. Luckily, I was going to school near enough to Pittsburgh to be able to go to a lot of Pirates games. The Buccos were one of the best teams in baseball then. Yep, their last glory era. Bonds, Van Slyke, Bonilla.

The Stump Merrill Era. Kevin Maas and Pat Kelly were the young hopefuls. Maas might have made it if he came up today. He had power, drew walks, and his career average was .232. The tolerance for strikeouts just wasn’t there in those days…He hit 65 HR in 1200+ AB. He was basically Rougned Odor of first baseman…in power… but he drew walks more than Roogie…

The Stump Merrill Era. Kevin Maas and Pat Kelly were the young hopefuls. Pat Kelly career highlight: In the shortened 1994 Pat lead the AL in SH with 14 in just 93 games. Can you even imagine a Yankee player with 14 SH in a season? … Hard to believe. Also hard to believe that Kelly spent at least parts of seven seasons with the Yanks. A West Chester University product.

Stupid Houck making our hitters look silly. Yes, he certainly is. The good news is that he has a tendency to become hittable around the 4th -5th inning thus far. Let’s hope he hits that wall today…

Seems like they should have been able to do more with him.

Van Slyke was such an under-rated player… He was great in CF with a strong arm… pounded RHP… ran well…

Ever wonder what a guy like Gardner might say to an infielder to get him out of the way on short high fly?
I had my whole team laughing one day when the SS kept coming on a ball I called for. “Mine. Mine. Back off, Frank, this mine”…
All I heard for two games was “Back off, Frank”. Frank was notoriously bad on pop flies. I needed out of my way in a serious way…

Yep, their last glory era. Bonds, Van Slyke, Bonilla. N.L. Cy Young winner Doug Drabeck, stolen from the Yankees. Yup. For Pat Clements, Cecilio Guante and Rick Rhoden. Although Rhoden did have one good year for the Yankees. John Smyly had a decent season or two for the Bucs back then.

John Smyly had a decent season or two for the Bucs back then. Tim Wakefield was going to be the MVP of the 91 NLCS until the Pirates blew game 7 in the 9th inning. They ripped Wakefield's name off the trophy and replaced with an Atlanta Braves player.
