Speaking of the Cubs -- I watched a little of their game with the White Sox this afternoon. I love weekday games from Wrigley. Anyway, Kyle Hendricks was pitching for the Cubs. I knew he'd had a decent career, but in looking up his stats I was amazed at how he stacks up with some seriously outstanding pitchers. His career ERA+ of 130 is the same as HOFers Carl Hubbell and Hal Newhouser. One behind HOF immortals Sandy Koufax and Dizzy Dean. One ahead of future HOFers Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole. But he's 31 years old and only has 82 victories. Never had a losing season. He'll be lucky to get to 150. Add a rookie of the year award, a third place and a ninth place finish in the Cy Young Award plus light consideration in the MVP voting one year. Top it all off with an ERA crown. Pretty nice career to date. Yet, he’s never thrown 200 innings. Never gave me the feeling that I was watching one of the best pitchers of our era. It doesn’t speak well for leaning on ERA+ much for thoughts of the Hall of Fame. Maybe he’ll get there some day. Maybe that’s the way the game is headed. These wimpy six innings or less starting pitcher of today are hard to comp with the Hubbells and Deans of the past, but what else have we? … Oh yeah, it's only one metric, albeit one I take a fancy to. For sure he ain't Koufax or Hubbell or Verlander. But you're right, it's the era he pitches in plus the way he is used. Another victim of the diminished role of the starting pitcher, which is near the top of the list of things I don't like about the current game.

Is that where you live Desousa? Or just visiting? I've lived here a good portion of my life. Born here, but moved to Florida in 1959 when I was four. Came back in 1990. One of my regrets is never having seen Vermont, nor New Hampshire (in which my dad was born). Vermont has a wonderful concentration of mountains, much like Colorado does (compared to state land mass). I’d bet it’s a beauty, especially in winter…

I guess I’ll know my life is over when they enshrine the first opener, with a career record of 0-42…

They’re still open for business or travel. A friend of mine took a vacation through that area in the fall to see the colors, ending up in Maine, which he said was simply idyllic.

One of my favorite places in New England is Plymouth Notch VT. The idyllic Coolidge homestead. They used to advertise that it was the only place in the world where you could get a Coolidge Burger, which used cheddar cheese made at the Coolidge farm. Calvin's son dropped in while we were there back in the 1970s.

Somehow I don’t see myself meandering back East too much in the future except for funerals and such… I might be wrong, the future is never certain…Heck, I won’t have a funeral, but there’s no guarantee that I’ll outlive my brother (75) or sister (78)…
