Team plays pretty well. Gleyber Torres comes back and team is terrible. What's the problem here?

Strong up the middle was always the mantra from baseball men when I was a kid, and it was difficult to argue: Munson, Dent and Randolph, and Mickey Rivers. Solid defensively and other than Dent, offensively. Posada, Jeter, and Bernie. Berra, Rizzuto, and Mantle. Dickey, Crow, DiMaggio.
We have Sanchez, Torres, and Hicks: flawed from the start. We were better with Higgy, Valenzuela, and Gardner/Judge.

Sometimes you expect what you expect, but you get what you get. We got away with less than stellar defense up there middle with Posada and Jeter, but neither one of them was a bonehead like Sanchez or Torres. They didn’t exacerbate the plays they missed with poorly judged throws tacking on additional bases. And they both provided exceptional offense consistently to make up for some of what they didn’t accomplish with the leather. I’m sure the expectation was for Torres to settle in at shortstop, and Gary to learn the one knee approach while both of them approached silver slugger status. For Hicks to continue to be competent in CF, while hitting well enough to represent the low offensive standards of the position. All of those expectations were out on a limb and pollyannish. So was the expectation that our pitching staff turn out to be one of the league’s best, but somehow that did happen, albeit with flaws that stood out at times…

It is hard to believe they are trying playing as poorly as they are against bad teams. But maybe they simply are not that good.

Defense is bad but our hitting will keep us out of the play offs. Too much money spent on relievers who never performed. Spend it on the offense.

It’s a mathematical basic… We definitely need some better bats next year. Injuries haven’t helped, but even when together this band just can’t hit the high notes often enough…

Injuries did not help but we just did not have a lot of people who could hit.
Stanton was finally unhurt and was less than dominating. Sanchez is now lost I think. Torrez might be able to hit but we have enough DH's.

But even if he could, we don't have room for him as a DH and he can't field.
