Until the new CBA is completed, I am dubious about what Cashman is actually willing and able to do. Of course, Cashman speaks with everyone to gauge interest, so that’s the normal tramp through the off-season woods. I hope he has the wherewithal to address his own public talking points with or without the new CBA in place. Thus far, he’s stated that he wants to improve shortstop, centerfield, and first base. He’s also said that he’s satisfied with catching depth but is open to anything, which is boilerplate Cashman-speak. Lastly, he’s mentioned a reluctance to have DJ LeMahieu installed as the everyday first baseman, which could signal Gleyber Torres will be part of any big-time trade deal in addition to the loss of major minor league talent. I always wanted to use major and minor back to back in a sentence. I’m glad we’re not looking at DJLM for first base, too. He becomes an average fielder there with a weak bat for the position (even if he gets back to 2019 form). I expect Torres and Voit to be traded. I wouldn’t be stunned if Urshela goes, though I think he should stay and keep his job. I’d be surprised if Gardner is asked back. Puzzled by what the team thinks of Gallo…

Puzzled by what the team thinks of Gallo… I’d wager they’ll roll the dice with him for the final year remaining on his contract, hoping he’ll revert to his numbers in Texas. He can play all three outfield positions if needed and can rival most anyone in left or right field with his glove and arm. Like Judge, he has more speed as a baserunner than expected for a guy his size at 6’5” 250 pounds. He can also play first and third in a pinch, too. And, he’s a lefty with power. Unless they are blown away in a trade offer, he’s likely worth more to them than he could fetch as a one-year rental.

There’s plenty of knuckle- draggers named Joey, especially of Italian heritage that would just as soon pummel you into the sidewalk as listen to your opinion on markers of effeminacy.

“Nov. 10: LHP Joely Rodríguez signs 1-year Major League deal. Rodríguez signed three days after his $3 million option (with a $500,000 buyout) was declined, which had sent him to free agency. Acquired from the Rangers in July, Rodriguez posted a 2.84 ERA in 21 games for New York.”
Rodríguez back with the Yankees.

MD was a little light on the mob types, going more for the KKK types named Buck… Even northern Delaware where Pipps hails from was likely a bit south and west of those “Joeys”… Well, there is Joey Votto and Joey Cora. Back in the day there was Joey Jay (I made a rhyme), the beetle-browed Reds pitcher who had back to back 21-win seasons and was, according to the researchers at the Topps Chewing Gum Company, the first Little Leaguer to make it to the majors. As to other Joeys-- Rat Pack comic Joey Bishop is a South Philly boy. As is former middleweight champion Joey Giardello, who has a statue on Passyunk Avenue, very close to the Melrose Diner where I had my share of greasy 5 AM SOS in my glory days. The current head of the Philadelphia mob (which should you be asked does not exist) is "Skinny Joey" Merlino, who has spent 19 of his 59 years in prison for crimes he did not commit (cough cough.) Joey is currently out on parole. He never would have been fingered in the first place if those rats Gaetano "Tommy Horsehead" Sclafidi and Peter "The Crumb" Caprio hadn't turned yellow and finked to the coppers to save their worthless necks. He was framed, I tells ya. In between incarcerations, Skinny Joey owned a restaurant in Boca Raton that used Mama's own recipes. I don't know if the food was any good, but I don't think anybody was going to complain.

His career batting average in Texas was .208 and he struck out 45% of the time. He does have some power but striking out every other plate appearance just doesn't do it for me. I'll give you that he has more speed than the average lamp post but he has only stolen 12 bases in the last 3 years. To me keeping him says more about what Cashman thinks about the outfield prospects in our farm system than it says about Gallo's ability.

Haha, Amy Fisher. Those were fun stories.
Also Joey Dee and the Starliters ("Peppermint Twist" and "Hot Pastrami.")

I'll give you that he has more speed than the average lamp post but he has only stolen 12 bases in the last 3 years. To me keeping him says more about what Cashman thinks about the outfield prospects in our farm system than it says about Gallo's ability. Gallo has one of the wierdest skillsets I've ever seen. Other low BA high strikeout sluggers (Dave Kingman, Chris Davis, Rob Deer to pick a few) still have significantly higher BAs than Gallo's abysmal .206, ranging from Deer's .224 to Davis's .233. But Gallo's OBP of .333 -- still nothing that will get you to Cooperstown-- is far better than any of those three in the low .300s. Gallo's OPS+ of 114 is similar to Kingman's 115 and better than Davis or Deer. The major difference is that all of those guys and others in the Three True Outcomes genre were terrible defensively and slow afoot. Gallo is outstanding with the glove, and while not a SB guy -- nobody on the Yankees is -- he does run the bases well and cover ground in the OF. I'm not saying our basis for judging Gallo should be by comparing him to those galoots, just pointing out how bizarre his body of work is. I absolutely agree that his BA and strikeout totals are unacceptable no matter how many home runs he hits. By far his best BA in a season was 2019's .253. And that year he only played 70 games. Next best is .209! Still, he isn't completely without value. I know it feels like he is much of the time-- I despair at most of his ABs -- but I'd like to see one -- just one -- more shot for him. Even if he could hit .250 without diminishing the rest of his game, he'd be a valuable contributor. I wouldn't bet on it, but I'm prepared to give him a short-leash chance.
