You should have tried out for the team, which is where you learn those skills. When I was athletic director, the toughest positions to fill were coaches for water polo and wrestling. Wrestling is such a technical craft requiring years of experience and technical knowledge to become a true practitioner. If Sierchio was here, he would appreciate this: I was Chad Mendes' school site administrator when he was in junior high school. Chad Mendes was a top flight college wrestler who eventually joined the UFC and was ranked as high as the number one contender in his weight class (145 pounds). He was a great kid with a great dad who raised him as a single father. Chad just made a truck load of money in a bare-knuckled fight, which he won. He also has several businesses, as a hunting guide and selling his own brand named food for camping/hunting trips. He was always such a humble kid and was always one of the top two or three wrestlers in his weight class in California. The coach had two sons in the team. As I recall they were quite good technically and probably deserved all the attention they got in that sport. The other sports, one was good in soccer. But they made the team in all the sports. I had to work, so I stayed away from organized sports, except for the one semi-pro baseball situation I got into on the fringes… because I could just do that when I was off work and they needed a player… I figured that might have been the reason. You may have been able to parlay wrestling into a college scholarship. I never saw soccer played in person until I was in college. Now, there are soccer fields everywhere. Lacrosse has always interested me, too. If I can ever get my life back on track, I may begin learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Either that or join a boxing gym.

I miss physicality and competition, but I also miss the peace of mind that I had when engaging in regular athletic activities. Camaraderie has its social benefits as well. Grabbing a pizza or fajitas after a tennis tournament is a fine way to end a great day.

I suppose there was something wrong with me. I eschewed find for work at so many turns. I was just recalling a sneak peek I had at my files in school one day. My fifth grade teacher, who was a pretty decent guy wrote of me: “Child is reserved. Chooses to stay inside and read at recess while others go out to play”. I snapped out of that to a great extent. I don’t particularly recall why I was staying inside that year. There was something I didn’t like about the way recess was run. There were a couple books I had discovered in the library. Anyway, I didn’t discover that note until about 9th grade when I had a pretty big blow up with one of my teachers. My file had been left open in the principals office. I though “Christ, they’re labeling me as a potential assassin or serial killer.”…

I only spend money on food for me and my pets, rent and utilities, taxes and insurance on the house in Iowa, phone, credit cards minimum payments, and internet access. The only place I drive is to the supermarket, my sister's once a month, or to job interviews. I was never able to get unemployment benefits due to procedural glitches, so every dollar counts. With all of the money I used to pay off hospital bills the last three years, I still owe medical bills for Sarah, but they shall have to wait, which has ruined my credit. I haven't picked up my prescription drugs lately, trying to spread the wealth as far as I can. To think, I used to own three houses, three automobiles, IRAs, Roth IRAs, Tax Sheltered Annuities and a vacation account. How the mighty hath fallen.

I though “Christ, they’re labeling me as a potential assassin or serial killer.”… I suspect you were trying to carve out a world that made sense, so you had to begin that alone with yourself first. When one is neglected or abused or restricted by control freaks, it's difficult to envision others wanting to share one's company. There is a pitched battle between hating oneself and dreaming a different reality. It is much easier to avoid circumstances that may result in rejection, as that is more than available once you go home. While away, the silence and peace is almost self-sustaining.

Screw the owners man: -MLB revenues have soared from $8.2 billion in 2015 to over $10.7 billion in 2019, a 30 percent increase -Player salaries have decreased by 6.4 percent, with the average salary declining from $4.45 million to $4.17 million during the span of the current CBA. -The median salary has fallen from $1.65 million in 2015 to $ 1.15 million in 2021, a decline of 30 percent. -54 percent of players in MLB are not yet eligible for arbitration, earning near the minimum salary. -13 teams had payrolls under $100 million for the 2021 season. Five teams spent less than $50 million. -Three teams spent less than $17 million on their 26 man major league payroll according to Spotrac. These teams are simply not trying to win. -The Players Association filed a grievance against the A’s, the Pirates, the Marlins, and Rays over how they have invested their revenue-sharing dollars in recent years. The CBA requires “each Club shall use its revenue sharing receipts … in an effort to improve its performance on the field.”

Pretty close diagnosis. It’s quite strange to understand it so well now. Depression and anxiety. Anxiety and depression. Through the eyes of a child it was not understandable. I thought it to be strange that my mother didn’t pick up on it, but she was divided between her own self loathing and self pity laced with depression that she focused on that and caring for my half sister, four years younger than I… and obviously more worthy of everything than I was.

Whats stopping you from joining a cheap gym like Planet Fitness for 10 dollars a month? It’s so easy to fall into the precipice of indebtedness when we become unemployed at ages beyond 50, have health problems, including depression and anxiety holding us back. The longer we have no employment, the skeptical the employers become. The neighbors become ballsy advocates that want to ask why you haven’t been hired and want to push you into taking a job that they heard about that has no appeal to you at all. Jobs where you know you’ll be underpaid, unappreciated, and abused. All in good faith and intentions, of course. I was saved from a similar fate when I qualified for unemployment as contract worker during the COVID run, but now that I’m back to work, any missed time at all puts me back onto the path toward indebtedness, like my missing 4/7 weeks recently and being forced to empty the small savings account again to survive. Whew back to work just on time before all the numbers went red again, hoping that these minor ailments quit hammering me, and God forbid I or Ruthie should have a major event. This is why it is said that the average senior citizen in America is living out his life in quiet desperation. We all get that feeling that we’re one banana peel away from being homeless. I don’t know what I would do without my little “business”. The mere thought of going to “work” on a daily basis for the standard 40 is gut-wrenching with so many poorly run companies and greedy owners out there. I suppose is to be a microcosm of the baseball players, albeit one with fewer resources to call on. Crying business owners claim that employees are sucking them dry while they continue to cavort to their country club life style in their Audis, then back to their 5500 foot abodes with gated fronts, or to their “second homes” in the mountains or at the lake for the weekends. “Let’s make this weekend a four-day one, dear. You know “the staff” can handle a couple of days without you watching every penny… you know, the ones that are bleeding is dry.” Nice, enjoyable rant. I don’t feel any better or more reassured. I’m off to work today at a home show, hopefully finding some clients willing to part their money to put solar on their houses to prolong my usefulness to a business. It’s still a bit like having a job, you see. The biggest difference is that I can miss time when ill, which I am often anymore. Without pay, but also without danger of being “fired”. But it’s all fragile in the sense that I work with a company that could replace me if they found someone better to provide the same services. What I do is considered undesirable employment to many. Some people would rather slit their throats than knock on doors and do solar surveys. Some people would recoil at cleaning dog poop out of yards, yet I see several people in our area that have created a business doing just that… End of rant? Maybe. I do feel a bit better now, and reading of what is happening to a good and capable man like yourself shows me how fortunate I am that I made a few bucks this week. Damn, can you think of a way to market yourself as a 1099 employee? It’s been decent for me, and the tax advantages are excellent if you use your own vehicle for transportation. Oops. I sound like my friendly neighbor, trying to steer your life for you. But just think about it. I think plenty of potential employers out there are loop hole seekers…
