The thing that ultimately bothers me about Cole is that he has pitched 42 innings and allowed 24 runs against Boston since joining the Yankees. That's just unacceptable. Didn't half of those runs come in two or three starts? It's not like he hasn't beaten Boston as a Yankee. Who was the last Yankee pitcher that owned Boston, especially in Fenway? Randy Johnson beat the Red Sox like five or six times in his first year with the Yankees, but Yankee fans are down on him because of his ERA when he was over 40 years old and needed back surgery. If Devers is walked with two outs, it is likely still 6-2 and no one is upset. Have to check later Rizz, I'm beat. I just know tonight 6 IP 5 ER, in April 4 IP 3 ER, and last year's WC 2 IP 3 ER. I know he's pitched some decent games in the past, but it’s not like he just had a couple of pastings and was otherwise effective. |

My neighbor stopped in to ask me a question just before the bottom of the ninth. I was outside dying to get him out of here, but missed the end of the game…

If you look at it differently, he was on a gimpy hamstring in the WC game; April 4 was the first start of the season, and he was shaky for his first three, if I recall. And, tonight could have been a non-event if Devers is walked with a base open, two outs, and a right-hander on deck. Cole's pitched solid games against the Red Sox last year in the regular season and in his first year in Pinstripes. It's the American League East. I do not remember a single pitcher during the dynasty years that owned Boston. They all had their clunkers, including in the post-season. Pedro Martinez, arguably the best pitcher of the last thirty years, called the Yankees his Daddy. I just cringe at the moves Boone makes and the ones that he doesn't when it seems obvious. Tonight was one of those for me. By the way, as a kid, I wanted the Yankees to walk George Brett against Goose Gossage, too. Brett beat Goose like a drum. |

This doesn't count his lousy playoff outing. If the Yankees play the Red Sox in the playoffs, Cole should pitch game 2 at the Stadium so he can avoid Fenway.

Cole got burned on 2 pitches. He needs to rethink his approach to Devers. Bullpen was outstanding, tho.

The Yankees just won their 60th game of the season in early July and are 15 games ahead of Boston in the American League East. Cause for celebration in my book. Vaya con Dios, Amigos.
