Opposing pitcher scouting report from Reddit:
Today, we are all part of a job interview: Luis Castillo is interviewing for a Yanks Rotation spot.
Castillo owns a 2.92 ERA over 71 IP.
Lets get to know the man:
Castillo, a right handed Pitcher, throws 4 Pitches, and all of them get almost even usage: 4sm Fastball, Changeup, Slider and Sinker. Against Lefties he does throw the Changeup a bit more and against righties, naturally, he throws the slider a bit more. But overall there are no outliers in usage.
You may have heard announcers talk about the Castillo Changeup. John Sterling must have mentioned it a couple times yesterday and i bet you are going to hear it a lot more today. Well in 2019 that Changeup was ranked as the 3rd best Pitch in MLB, which is why he got known for it i believe. But recently, especially this year, the changeup is not his best pitch. Its his 4sm Fastball, which when you think about it makes a lot of sense because coaches and managers probably tell their hitters to look out for that great changeup and castillo is going to get them on the Fastball instead. On the other side, the changeup is ranked slightly below league average this year.
But with a 2.92 ERA, and a xERA of 3.37 and xFIP of 3.32, his pitches are by no means bad. The guy throws absolutely terrific stuff. With the expected stats being a little higher than his actual stats, defense has probably been good behind him as well.
His stats are slightly better against righties, so i expect carpenter and overall a lefty heavy lineup tonight. Once again, they are by no means bad stats against lefties tho: .632 OPS allowed against them (.565 against righties). While his allowed OBP is "higher" than expected for such an OPS, he allowed just 5 HR, no Triples and 14 Doubles this year, which makes his allowed slugging numbers very low. And if you think about where Castillo has to pitch, Great American Ballpark (one of the most hitter friendly ballparks), it makes this even more impressing.
His starts have been great going back to the start of the year. He allowed 4 ER (no higher than 4ER) only once this year and has been going longer into games recently. I expect something around 7 IP 0-2 ER tonight if i am being realistic (i would want the yanks to score more though).
If Castillo pitches a gem tonight it could create a craving for yanks fans that cashman might have to overpay for. But with his stats it might be worth it if the yanks want to make a deep postseason run.

Who says Carpenter can't field? That was funny the way both Carpenter and Nestor cracked up. Carpenter made a nice catch but forgot about that wall being there. |

Castillo has a career ERA+ of 125, but a W-L record of only 43-53. He's a little older than I thought at 29.
