Max Scherzer has given up 4 HR's and 7 runs to the Padres in just 5 innings. Yu Darvish on the mound for the Friars.
Scherzer booed off the mound as he departs.

Just saw that St. Louis was 93-0 when they had at least a 2 run lead after 8 innings. That's baseball! I saw the last part of that game. It was proof that the Aaron Boone approach to managing is more common than not. The Phillies barely laid a glove on Quintana, but Oliver Marmol pulled him after 75 pitches in 5 1/3 innings because of course you can't let a pitcher go through the lineup three times. So he wound up using his closer Ryan Helsley with one out in the eighth. Helsley lost the plate in the ninth, along with a couple of seeing-eye hits, and wound up turning a 2-0 lead into a 6-2 deficit. Not only did the Cards lose, but his closer threw 33 pitches and is probably burned for tomorrow. I always thought the reason Boone et al were called managers is the job was to "manage" the situational aspects of game. Everyone one else is a coach, even the bench coach, but the manager makes the in-game calls. MLB should replace manager with script reader or sabermetric enforcement officer.

I wonder if Mets' fans are as tough on Scherzer for such a clunker as Yankees' fans are on Cole? It would be the end of the world if Cole had a line like that in the playoffs.

They booed him off the mound. Pretty funny stuff. Even Mariano Rivera gave away a couple heartbreakers in the playoffs, as you well know. Greg Maddox who won 355 games was more or less mediocre in the playoffs in my recollection. Seven-time Cy Young Winer and HGH/PED loaded Roger Clemens was no sure thing. And, we know that Pedro Martinez once called the Yankees his "daddy." What I remember about playoff games are the key hits in big spots, the big defensive plays to stop a rally, and pitchers who work out of trouble when doom seems certain. No doubt it all starts with pitching, but what the Yankees lacked after game five of 2004 to now (2009 the exception) has been hitting and hitting with RISP. Too many times, nearly the entire team went ice cold with one or two exceptions - like Stanton the last couple seasons. The Dynasty Teams would grind at bats in big situations, with a walk from Boggs or a triple from Girardi or a big time homer from number nine hitting Brosius, or a single up the middle by Luis Sojo, or a double in the gap from Ricky Ledee. At some point in time the big guns like Tino and Jeter and Posada and O'Neill and Bernie would come through, but there were always the other guys with a key hit to keep a rally going or a crucial at bat in which they would find a way.

Excellent point rizz. I hope we grind out some ABs this postseason, we certainly have the talent. I think Oswaldo can be an X-factor,

Luis Castillo still paying dividends for the huge load given up to get him. Castillo pitches into the eighth inning, as Seattle shuts out Toronto.

Puppet Boone is waiting for Cashman and the analytic nerds to give him the answer. If they go with Cortes in game 1, Nestor could pitch game 4 on normal rest. Cole going in game 2 means he would pitch game 5 on three days rest, something he's done before. Nestor has never pitched on three days rest. Sevy will pitch game 3.

Guardians Rays 0-0 in the 10th. With no ghost runner this game may never end with these offenses.
