I miss Tanaka and watching him negotiate a lineup, because he was a pitcher not just a thrower. It's a shame we only saw him for a short time with a healthy arm without an UCL tear. That split finger was never the same as his first season with the Yankees. Even so, Tanaka pitched some big time games and playoff games. Also lamentable is he never had an infield defense as good as the one last season. Solid defensively off the mound, a good athlete, and most likable was his ability to get batters to chase without walking the house.

The dream of Tanaka returning to the Yanks is slowly fading away.

Do we need more pitching? We could use more offense.

Do we need more pitching? We could use more offense. 2022 WAR: Gleyber - 4.1 Bryan Reynolds - 2.9 Yet so many people want to kick Gleyber to the curb while Reynolds would cost several premium prospects.

I should have added the disclaimer that Reynold's WAR is hurt by his defensive play in CF, but if the Yankees traded for him it would be for LF, where I think he's a better defender.

Do we need more pitching? We could use more offense. for me I'm not sold on Montas. I think his past numbers won't replicate in the AL East. But yeah we can always use more offense but from where and at what cost?

But yeah we can always use more offense but from where and at what cost? Eliminating Aaron Hicks’ inconsistency and horrible at bats with runners on base would be a great start. His hang-dog attitude has to wear over a long season and his defense follows his offensive woes. Montas has not demonstrated any dominance outside of the Oakland Coliseum, and he seemed like a desperation move close to the trade deadline after dealing Monty. The fact that the New York Yankees have a lack of left-handed hitting threats for years now is just dumbfounding. How can you build a team like that with the dimensions of Yankee Stadium? During the playoffs, every little advantage counts and lineup construction is one of those, especially when most pitching is right handed.

It’s slim pickings on the free agent market at this point, but Sherman does note that the team has had some interest in Jurickson Profar. The switch-hitter was worth 2.5 fWAR for the Padres in 2022 and would be a solid option to upgrade their outfield stocks. Yet Oswaldo Cabrera was worth 1.5 fWAR in 44 games and Aaron Hicks the same in 130 games, so the team may not see Profar as enough of a needle-mover to commit to the multi-year deal he likely seeks. The same could be said of another left-handed bat in David Peralta, but it doesn’t appear there’s been much interest from the Yankees anyway.
Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reported in a recent mailbag that the team could forego external options and let Hicks and Cabrera battle it out in spring training for the starting job. While it isn’t the most exciting option for Yankees fans, there is some sense in it. The Yankees roster is strong enough to be in a good spot for the first three months of the season without an upgrade in left, so the team could see if Hicks can rebound or Cabrera can sustain his small sample of work over a longer period, before deciding whether or not to seek an external upgrade at the trade deadline.

Yawn. He’s another righty bat. At least he does have a 107 OPS +. It’s hard to get excited about anyone when almost all hitters have such lackluster numbers…
