Who do you think was the last 20th century starting pitcher that qualified for the ERA title to have an ERA lower than 1.50 at home for an entire season? Think as long as you want and your answer will be wrong. I’ll hold the answer to the end of this post to give you some time while I throw out a couple hints to help give the answer away. (Don’t peek ahead).
He served up a home run to Bobby and Barry Bonds. Bobby Bonds on 25-Aug-1979. Son Barry took him deep on 13‑Jun‑1993 & 15-Aug-1993.
Finally, he was once on the wrong end of a perfect game. Don’t look in BR to get the answer, I’m about ready to give it to you. The perfect game pitcher was Dennis Martinez.
Ready? Did you get the answer?
Last hint: 1.38 ERA at Wrigley Field in 1992.
Mike Morgan.
9-2 at home 7-6; 3.94 on the road. Allowed 3 HR at home, 11 on the road. At home only 100 hits against in 130.1 innings. On the road 109.1 innings, 103 hits.
Easily his best MLB season, if you say you guessed this one, you have a low credibility score with me…

Almost 40 years have passed since Pete Incaviglia finished his his college seasons he still owns the NCA single season record and career record for HRs. He hit 100 from 1983-85 and 48 in 1995 alone. Incy was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Game in Lubbock, TX in 1995 with a pretty impressive group, including Lou Gehrig. See the list of that year’s inductees below: Jim Abbott Jack Barry Bobo Brayton Jim Brock Bibb Falk Lou Gehrig Pete Incaviglia Jerry Kindall Fred Lynn Christy Mathewson John Olerud Joe Sewell Dick Siebert Phil Stephenson Derek Tatsuno… Although Lou Gehrig only played two seasons at Columbia, he held the single-season HR record for 55 years until it was broken in an expanded season in 1977. He also batted .444. And as a pitcher he still holds the single-game strikeout record for the Lions with 17. I've never been able to find Christy Mathewson's collegiate baseball records at Bucknell, but he was actually better known for his football exploits. The originator of the All-American teams, Walter Camp, said that Matty was the best drop-kicker he had ever seen. He was honored as "the twelfth man" on Camp's 1900 All-American team. That year he also had a 65-yard touchdown run and a 75-yard punt return for a TD. He was Captain of the football team, President of his senior class, head of the literary society, and a member of the glee club. He also met his future wife Jane there. Of all things, he was a forestry major. The archetypal Golden Boy who, of course, died at the age of 45 from the effects of a mustard gas attack he endured during a training exercise in World War I. I went digging here :https://bucknell_ftp.sidearmsports.com/custompages/pdf/baseball/BaseballRecordBook.pdf for Mathewson’s stats at Bucknell. Sadly it appears that very little was kept prior to the 1960 season. I’m assuming they were either lost or simply deemed unimportant up until then…Damned eggheads. What did they know about what was important? …

John Olerud owns the highest single season batting average for two expansion teams. Olerud’s .363 in 1993 is the best ever for 1 season for Toronto & his .354 in 1998 is the best season average for any qualifying player for the Nee York Mets.
Olerud played for 5 different teams and his cousin Dale Sveum played for seven teams. They were never team mates, although they both were Yankees at one point in their careers.
For the 1988 season, Olerud was named collegiate Player of the Year nationally after batting .464 to go with his 15-0 record on the mound as a Washington State Cougar...

Man, you packed a lot of good info into that post Inger. And somehow it escaped me that Olerud and Sveum were cousins. An unsuspected pair of cousins (to me) was Hal Newhouser and former Expo player and A's manager Ken Macha. Odd because there is a nearly 30-year gap in ages. Johnny Mize and Claire Ruth were second cousins.

I always wondered why they couldn't provide Olerud with a padded baseball cap, rather than having him wear a helmet while in the field.

Bob Horner is the only player in MLB history to hit four home runs in a game that his team lost… Montreal hit 3 home runs that day to beat the Braves 11-8. Al Newman* (226 .304 .266 .570 58) hit his only career HR in 2,409 career plate appearances to help Montreal out-slug Atlanta…There were two outs and a runner on second base when he victimized Zane Smith with a drive to deep left field… *Al Newman, not Alfred E. Neuman from Mad Magazine… For the legacy posters here who recall JWildfogel, this would have set him off on 4,308 word post about Spy vs. Spy, 43-man Squamish and who-knows-what else…and then he would have followed up with at least six posts of another 800 words or more recalling particular episodes and historic anniversary issues, etc… Remember Bob Horner's weight clause? He could earn significant bonuses if he kept his weight below 215 pounds. The guy could hit, though. A 127 career OPS+. I miss JWild's dissertations. Especially on Mad Magazine, which for both of us provided a lifelong guide for a proper attitude. Can anyone give me a heartfelt potrzebie?

You know what’s coming, right? 🎵 Oh, they’re cousins 🎼 Unexpected cousins 🎶 In every way 🎵 One walks much more 🎼 And hits much more music 🎶 You can read their swings music 🎼 When cousins both play ball 🎵… <Pipps made me do it>…

And the obvious double when one of them had her back to the camera. Remember Patty Duke had a hit song in 1965 with the wretched "Don't Just Stand There"?

Horrendous. It didn’t launch her singing career as they had hoped… She seemed such an unlikely mate for John Astin, or perhaps Twas t’other way around. Why not Ted “Lurch” Cassidy?…Or Christopher “Hand” Hart?…

Why not Ted “Lurch” Cassidy?…Or Christopher “Hand” Hart?… Yep, it was an odd match. Another oddity is that both Patty Duke and William Schallert, who played her father (or Pop-O or Uncle Martin if you prefer) both later became Presidents of the Screen Actors Guild. Also, Schallert and Jean Byron, who played her mother, both played teachers on "The Many Loves Of Dobie Gillis." More brain rot caused by TV.

Anyone recall the Mike Leake t-shirt shoplifting fiasco of 2011? Then a 23-year old, he was arrested on accusation of stealing 10 tee shirts valued at $5.95 each while making $425K per year. The charges were eventually dismissed after he presented his explanation: www.espn.com/mlb/news/story?id=6384863
