HAROLD BAINES Baines is the only #1 pick the White Sox ever had that went one to have a positive WAR in his career. Baines was the #1 overall pick, right out of high school in 1977. His career WAR was 38.8. CHW’s only other #1 overall pick was Danny Goodwin in 1971 who spent 7 years in the majors, retiring with a -1.7 WAR. Baines received the gift of Free Agency from BAL 4 times. 01-Nov-1993; 20-Oct-1994; 06-Nov-1995; & 29-Oct-1997. Harold owns the biggest gap between 100 RBI seasons in MLB history. Baines had 113 RBI for CHW in 1985. Didn’t have another 100+ until playing for BAL & CLE w/103 in 1999—a 14-year stretch… Is that why he is in the Hall of Fame? It’s as good of a reason as any I can think of… other than that he played for nearly a hundred years…

Carlos Narveaz has become MLB’s 483 Venezuelan player. I think the first time I learned there WAS a Venezuela was on a Looie Aparicio baseball card.
I just realized that I owe a significant amount of my education to Topps and those little cardboard rectangles…
