I know Ken usually knows what he's talking about but I'm not sure I believe the tax is an issue when Cashman was just saying earlier this week he was looking at big names and not his usual minor tweak comments.

MLB should be incentivizing teams to go for it, instead they put in impediments bc cheap owners cry about expenses. Yankees having to give up their 2nd and 5th rd picks this year bc of Rodon signing is another in long line of pathetic consequences put in by MLB.
Anyway, the fact there are this many question marks on a $290 million payroll is pretty impressive tbh.

Realistically..
Bellinger + Grichuk is probably the most likely scenario here. Getting both would replace the Bauers/Mckinney/Calhoun/Oswaldo etc group that is barely giving the Yankees anything. That would be an upgrade for sure.
While that moves the needle a little bit I still feel someone like Soto is a huge game changer and could do what Cespedes, Soler, etc did for some struggling offenses in the last few years that were in a similar state at the trade deadline.
Obviously Othani could do that too, but I just am not feeling like he gets traded and if he does somewhere like Seattle is prob most likely since they would prob be able to sign him to an extension, because of the Japanese media presence there and the fact the team is borderline on the cusp of being a good team (right now they are exactly .500). I just can't see him going to somewhere like Baltimore or Cincinnati or Tampa. Seems super unlikely to me he would go to the Yankees.
Outside of Soto and Ohtani outside of what we KNOW is available I'm not sure anyone else is on that caliber that would be on their level. So the best the Yankees might have to hop for is Bellinger + Grichuk + maybe a pitcher or two that with Judge, Nestor, and Losaiga back should be enough to turn this around enough to get into the playoffs.

Utilityman Isiah Kiner-Falefa, meanwhile, is hitting just .251/.309/.369. That’s 11% worse than average, by measure of wRC+. Acquired to be a stopgap at shortstop, Kiner-Falefa has just eight innings at that position in 2023 and has been used primarily as an outfielder this season. Defensive metrics haven’t provided a strong review of his glovework there, however.
Center fielder Harrison Bader is also a free agent at season’s end and is playing his customary brand of standout defense. However, his .275 on-base percentage also ranks 295th of the 326 players with at least 150 plate appearances this season. His overall .246/.275/.427 batting line checks in below average.
The most palatable rental option for the Yankees to trade would be southpaw Wandy Peralta, who’s earning $3.35MM this season. He’s currently sporting a 2.48 ERA, but his 19.5% strikeout rate is below average and his 13.6% walk rate is an obvious eyesore. Still, Peralta is averaging just shy of 96 mph on his heater and also possesses a huge 63.2% ground-ball rate.
Rosenthal speculates on the possibility of a Gleyber Torres trade, which could simultaneously fetch more talent in return and also trim payroll more than any of those rentals aside from Severino. He’s earning $9.95MM in 2023 and hitting a solid .264/.333/.430 with 14 homers.

Hopefully this opens up the floodgates, because the Yankees need some trades now than 10 days from now.
