The Rays are only out four games in the loss column for the final wild card slot. They seem to be packing it in.

Did teams not make mid-season trades in the 1970s? Those '77 and '78 Yankee squads were basically the same teams in the post-season as they were in spring training. Remember until 1986 the trade deadline for many years was June 15, so fewer teams were willing to give up on the season. I checked the 78 Yanks and they had only played 60 games at that point.

He only played in eight games for the Yankees that year. According to the baseballref transaction list, Kingman was traded on September 15 from the Angels to the Yankees for Randy Stein. A trade deadline of June 15 was established in 1923, and even before that teams couldn't acquire new players after September 1. That had to be some kind of waiver deal. Not that it had much impact on the season.

I woke this morning a bit later than usual and anxiously checked the forum to see who we had acquired. Next I expect we’re going to get a presser stressing who’s coming back and how they’ll be more beneficial than anyone we could have traded for.
We’ll also hear how none of the trades we could have made “made sense” as we watch our prospects rot on the vine and our 35-year old has beens continue to play…

I have absolutely no confidence in the bullpen and especially Holmes.

Add that to the gut punch a couple of weeks ago and we really see who this team is. We have starters who put us behind the eight ball too often, and offense that struggles to consistently score, and even when they do put runs on the board, we have an awful bullpen that can't hold a lead. This team is hard broken.

We've had a number of those lately.
