Last night was a real kick in the guts, it almost felt like two losses. We've had a number of those lately. A couple, like the one last night, kicked even a bit lower. Rhymes with guts… Young girl standing on a ledge Looks like another suicide She wants to hit those bricks Cause the news at six Gotta stick to a deadline…

I woke this morning a bit later than usual and anxiously checked the forum to see who we had acquired. Next I expect we’re going to get a presser stressing who’s coming back and how they’ll be more beneficial than anyone we could have traded for. We’ll also hear how none of the trades we could have made “made sense” as we watch our prospects rot on the vine and our 35-year old has beens continue to play… The refrain remains the same.

Did teams not make mid-season trades in the 1970s? Those '77 and '78 Yankee squads were basically the same teams in the post-season as they were in spring training. In June 1976 the Yankees made a big trade with the Orioles. A trade that in my opinion eventually cost the Yankees another world series championship.

The deal with the Birds was to revise the Yankees starting rotation with Doyle Alexander and Ken Holtzman, plus the Yankees had Vida Blue joining the team as well. Scott McGregor was injured with a collar bone injury and hadn't pitched that season. Grant Jackson (6-0) would help out the Yankees bullpen for 1 season. Henndicks was a veteran reserve catcher for Munson. The Yankees had Mike Health in the minors, who was being converted to catcher. Dempsey was ready to move on from being just reserve catcher. Losing Rudy May was tough one. So was Clueless Bud's ruling on the Vida Blue trade. The Yankees still had Catfish Hunter, Ed Figueroa and Dock Ellis in their starting rotation. Tippy Martinez was in Martin's doghouse and Dave Pagan was on the AAA shuttle from Syracuse since 1973. This trade didn't cost them World Championship. The Reds had kick the Yankees butt in the 1976 World Series. The 1977 team made trades for a starting shortstop Bucky Dent, starter Mike Torrez, Paul Blair and Catcher/DH Cliff Johnson. The 1978 team had made trades for Jay Johnstone, Gary Thomasson and pick up minor league hurler Ron Davis from the Cubs for Ken Holtzman (12-10 in 44 games). Both 1977 and 1978 had key MLB Free Agent signings that helped win 2 World Championships.

Been down this road before Clipper. I don't care who was in Martin's doghouse, there have been many players there. At least one I know of is in the Hall of Fame. The Yankees also didn't need any help that season since they were basically a lock to win the AL East. So...The answer is the same... The Yankees traded good prospects especially McGregor and Martinez for players that were no longer on the Yankees roster a couple of years after that trade. The trade was made in 1976, Alexander and Jackson weren't with the Yankee in 1977, and Holtzman pitched 71. 2 inning for the Yankees in 1977 and 17.2 inning for the Yankees in 1978. Holzman's Yankee career ERA is 4.64.
Meanwhile...McGregor was an Ace his first 5 full seasons with the Orioles. With the help of Dempsey, Martinez and McGregor the Orioles went on to the world series in 1979 and won the world series in 1983. Meanwhile the Yankees could have used those players in 1981.

The Philles sneak in and grab a reliever who has pitched better than anyone in the Yankee bullpen.

The Philles sneak in and grab a reliever who has pitched better than anyone in the Yankee bullpen. Both Estevez and Scott are in their walk years. Probably why the Phillies didn't have to trade any of their top ten prospects.

Snell is the latest name to be linked to the Yankees. If so, with his contract I hope the Yankees don't trade too much for him.
