The kids high school schedules sure are different then when I was in school. She has classes, like "Parenting" and "Early Adult Living". lol. Early Adult Living sounds like a good class though. Yeah, Early Adult Living is pretty sweet. I didn't think you needed a course to prepare for it, it just sort of drops in your lap, but at 17 it certainly would have grabbed my attention more than reading John Milton's "On His Blindness" or studying logarithmic tables.

The Wilmington Blue Rocks weren't too far from your old turf. I can remember going to see the Frederick Keys when they were the Orioles Class A affiliate. Pete Rose Jr. was on that team. They used to have a corny seventh inning stretch tradition called "show us your keys" when everyone would hold their car keys and jangle them. Minor league baseball is a joy. There was a short-lived team in Pueblo called the Big Horns. They folded halfway through their one season of 1995. Never made it there, but I did take in a Colorado Springs Sky Sox game in the late 1980s when they were in the PCL. Coors is fun, and there is a really good museum across the street that has memorabilia from all the old major league parks. Worth seeing even if the Rockies aren't playing. I could have easily wandered over to Wilmington for a game, but never did. Denver had become such a hellhole that I have no desire to be there. Colorado is not unlike other states in that we have our major cities and then we have the extreme rural areas, with my area being about as extremely rural as it gets. I hope I never see Denver again… 🤢 Inger, I am putting you down as a "no" vote for a road trip to Coors Field.

There are certain adventures that a man might be tempted to take. Sort of like when Bill Munny heard about the whore that got cut up… “- Ned Logan: What did these fellas do? Cheat at cards? Steal some strays? Spit on a rich fella? What? – Bill Munny: No, they cut up a woman. – Ned Logan: What? – Will Munny: Yeah, they cut up her face, cut her eyes out, cut her fingers off, cut her tits, everything but her cunty, I suppose. – Ned Logan: I’ll be dogg-Golly, I guess they got it comin’. ‘Course, you know, Will, if Claudia was alive you wouldn’t be doin’ this.” [Bill is trying to convince Ned to hunt down the perpetrator with him] –‘Unforgiven’.

Most people do not know John Milton, much less read him. Next, there will be a course entitled, "Breathing: Why It's Important," but Mark Twain will be deemed too controversial for future generations. I've never encountered so many people clueless of anything not involving their cell phones.

I'm still waiting for that day when it helps me in the real word but after 35 years I don't think that day will ever come.

But it lends itself to being used in goofy humor, a quality I was never able to discern in Milton.

Yeah Chi, I have to admit my brush with logarithms and sines and cosines and radical integers hasn't made much of a difference in my day to day life. But I'm glad I at least know the concepts, if only to poke ignorant fun at them.

It should be noted, all those type of classes are still being taught in high school, but most of them are electives, they're not mandatory.

And I was under the impression that your son is younger than your daughter. Is that not true?

I cannot imagine teaching Milton to high school students, which is likely why you have no appreciation for it. Indeed, that is truly "Paradise Lost." If your real world does not include the human condition, then I'll never be able to explain the value of great literature. If the real world is simply overcoming living check to check and learning a trade, then a GED and vocational training is the better way to go. By 22, one can have a house, a car, a boat, and a bank account without a six figure debt of student loans.

When it came time for us to do a report on Milton, I just watched Milton Berne’s show and wrote a report on it. I told the teacher she never specified WHICH Milton. I still got a “C” based on that argument. <Made up story>…
