Ted believed in pulling the ball, hitting 335 of his home runs to right field, 44 to center, and 33 to right center. And, he only swung at strikes. 30 of his homers were at Yankee Stadium and 248 at Fenway, which is much more cavernous center to right field than New York. So then the question becomes which player is better suited to fill the current needs of the Yankees? I don’t we could do wrong either way… And with that in mind, Soto might be the closest player availability that compares with either of these guys. That said, his similarity scores mate him up with mostly guys a cut below… Soto may end up a Hall of Fame player, but guys like Ted Williams and Stan Musial are indeed a cut above even above average Hall of Famers.

You would have to take Ruth, but it would be unbearable not to have Gehrig. Stan Musial is just about my favorite player in baseball history -- if he'd been a Yankee he would definitely be. He'd be the perfect teammate, the perfect gentleman, the perfect representative of your franchise. While he wasn't renowned for his defense, he was good in his younger days when he was very fast --"The Donora Greyhound" was his first nickname -- certainly better than Williams, who was never considered much of a defender. Seven batting titles, an OBP of 417 (.427 at home, .407 on the road, 252 HRs at home, 223 on the road, so he was pretty steady no matter where he played.) Plus my favorite Musial career stat -- 1,815 hits at home, 1,815 hits on the road. So I would take Ted Williams. Seriously, if he never moved more than one foot in either direction in LF, his hitting was so other-worldly that it makes up for everything. A .482 career OBP (.496 at Fenway, .467 on the road; 252 HRs at home, 223 on the road, not a wild disparity at all.) He conveniently played essentially one entire modern season at Yankee Stadium, 157 games, in which he hit 30 HRs and had 93 RBIs, and while his BA was a low (for him) .310, his OBP was just a shade above his overall career mark at .484. Plus he was facing Yankee pitching, which would have kept his numbers down somewhat. Plus being one of the Inner Circle of Olympian Baseball Gods, he would have adjusted as needed. In my opinion, unless the other player in question is Babe Ruth, you take Ted Williams every time.

Just a slight cut behind Ruth and Gehrig…

The pregnancy of the pause swells ever larger in the forthcoming days… We need the Yanks to stand up like the greatest franchise in sports more than ever this season. I think the proof is now there. Dumpster diving isn’t a consistent winning strategy…

I'd be happy if the Yankees sign Bellinger because it's not my money, but the bust potential for him is huge. He's still a lifetime .258 hitter with a .335 OBP and an OPS+ of 120. Those aren't bad numbers but they aren't superstar either. The 26 HRs he hit last year was his first time hitting at least 20 since his career year of 2019 when he hit 47. He has such wild vacillations in hitting -- the three years before last year's .305 he batted .239, .165 and .210. If he signed a megadeal with the Yankees and started out next season looking anything like that, the fans would be brutal. Again, I'm not opposed to getting him, but there is a sea of red flags with this guy. When will TV talking heads ever learn that when more than one person at a time is speaking, it's incomprehensible?

Sevy can keep his NYC apartment. Shows how crazy sports can be. A player can miss all that time with injuries and still get a guaranteed 13 million.
