I agree, but it’s in the CBA, so I guess both sides saw the benefit to this calculation. For the Dodgers, in addition to the CBT relief, they will be paying in dollars that will be increasingly devalued and for Ohtani I assume there are tax benefits. I wonder why more teams don't do this with extreme high value players. Maybe they will as salaries become increasingly incomprehensible. I don't think most players would be willing to defer a majority of their salary for years like Ohtani. He's a special case since he does have 40+ million per year on endorsement revenue to fall back on, plus losing all the time with the Angels probably drove him crazy and he really wants to be a Dodger. I get all the benefits to these deferrals but I think a sport already without a salary cap should be able to reduce luxury tax computations like this. It doesn't seem fair.

It makes me wonder if Cashman saw the Twitter post of Ohtani's contract and thought "Why didn't we think of that with Aaron Judge?" I assume there are advantages and disincentives to delay payment, but if the Yankees are trying to maximize the prime years of Judge and Cole, it would have been a fine way to preserve dollars to strengthen the roster rather than always returning to the bargain basement reusable player pile.

From the NY Post:
"According to the rumor mill, Ohtani attempted to bake similar deferrals into every contract he negotiated, not just the one the Dodgers awarded him. Additionally, there's supposedly some language in his recently finalized deal that holds the Dodgers' feet to the fire and makes sure they reinvest the money he loaned them rather than pocket it. What, exactly, that is, no one knows. However it's written, it assures MLB that the Dodgers must use the $24 million they've gained by stretching Ohtani's deal into the deep future for good, not evil.
Unfortunately "good," in this context, involves signing Yoshinobu Yamamoto away from the Yankees. The Dodgers have reportedly prioritized him in recent days and will meet with him by end of week. The Yankees aren't eliminated, of course, but when the team with Ohtani clears the deck explicitly to make additional high-profile moves to satisfy the terms of their agreement, you have to feel Not Great."

I suppose some credit is due to whomever Ohtani uses as his agent/financial advisor, who is apparently a creative genius…

I'd guess the present value of that contract is worth between 45-60% of the total amount, depending on what interest rate you use to calculate it. Don't know how that figures in the salary cap determination. If it figures at all.

This is a risky signing, but the Giants were having a hard time finding anyone to take their money.

The Yankees aren't even meeting with Bellinger let alone singing him.

The Yankees aren't even meeting with Bellinger let alone singing him. I’m thinking that wishing for more (if we get Yamamoto) would be just plain gluttony. If we miss on “The Big Yam” and Bellinger is still on the board we might make a stab at him. His addition would really turn the Yanks lineup into a wrecking crew… And I prove the OF defense by a significant measure…

Just stay away from Primanti Brothers Tellez Hah. I can make four meals out of one of their sandwiches. I had a Tall Boy Reuben there one time and my digestive system was screwed up for a week. It was fun for awhile, though.

Royals grab their second pitcher of the day after signing Seth Lugo in the afternoon. I wanted the Yanks to get Lugo as a steady number four or five -- after signing Yamamoto, of course. I always liked that guy, understanding his limitations. The Royals may be where the Orioles were a few years ago, a lot of good young talent coming along.

Lugo always seemed to pitch well against the Yankees.
