I wanted the Yanks to get Lugo as a steady number four or five -- after signing Yamamoto, of course. I always liked that guy, understanding his limitations. The Royals may be where the Orioles were a few years ago, a lot of good young talent coming along. Lugo always seemed to pitch well against the Yankees. Yep, he's New York-tested. Now I'm looking maybe at Michael Wacha as a guy to fill that role. They need at least one more fair-to-middling pitcher even if they get Yamamoto.

If he could get himself back into the range of 180 innings he could again reach the levels of his 2015 17-7 season. When he’s right, he’s nasty… besides, I like being able to say Wacha-Wacha when he’s pitching…

Wacha-Wacha is definitely an incentive to sign!

Dodgers getting Glasgow and Margot? Hope this takes them out or at least cools them on Yamamoto but I doubt it.

Dodgers getting Glasgow and Margot? I don't think I ever bothered to look up Tyler Glasnow's body of work before, but it isn't anywhere near what I thought it would be. He's 30 years old and has a career record of 30-27 with an ERA+ of 107 and a WHIP of 1.206. Last year when he won 10 games was the first time he had won more than six in a season. It was also his season with the most IP at 120, which along with the 111 he pitched in 2018 are the only times he's thrown over 100 innings. To be fair, working through his injury issues, in his last five years he has an ERA+ of 137 and a WHIP of 1.013. Still, he's only won 26 games in that span and has averaged 67 IP per year. Sounds like the kind of pitcher the Dodgers seek out -- high ceiling, very fragile, likely to spend most of the year on the IL. He would fit in perfectly with Walker Buehler, Tony Gonsolin, Dustin May and even in recent years Clayton Kershaw. Manny Margot is straight out of the Harrison Bader - Trent Grisham mold.

Wall Street Journal sports reporter Jared Diamond -- yes, they have a sports staff -- has been following the Yamamoto discussions and said on MLBTV this afternoon that Yamamoto is driven almost entirely by the last dollar he can get. The way he put it, if one team offers Yamamoto one dollar more than another team, that's where he'll sign. He also noted that Yamamoto is friends with Mets' pitcher Kenta Maeda. Not sure what that means if he is looking strictly at the bottom line.
Giants President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi said that the Giants offered Ohtani the identical package that he signed for with the Dodgers. He said that Ohtani turned down an offer to be shown around San Francisco and kept his visit strictly to the ballpark because he didn't want to be seen in public. Sounds like the Dodgers had this pretty much all along and that Ohtani simply did not want to leave SoCal.

Hah, that's funny. Two guys following this with completely different takes. The guy from the WSJ was on Chris Russo's show and was adamant that Yamamoto only cares about the money. You would think Ken Rosenthal has better sources. But they both have to produce content, no matter what.

We were all better off with Pipps on the beat, wearing out shoe leather, using that otherworldly charm and Forest Gump serendipity to confirm backup attribution while protecting the source. Driving that yellow 1966 Ford Mustang convertible, wearing the trilby's hat, irrepressibly drawn to the most frightening stories into dark alleys, voodoo shops, abandoned Victorian houses, and graveyards armed with only a tape recorder and a 16mm camera Rollei 16S camera with electronic flash. Pipps would also have had a leather-bound martini kit with a wooden handle and a half-opened fifth of Macallan Whiskey. B ut, not the 18 year old bottle, as he is well aware that the 12 year old is the better glass (Pipps, check out Stephen Fry talking about Kingsley Amis toward the end of the interview at the 35.35 interval). And, the mention of the Jeeves and Wooster, P.G. Wodehouse excerpt: “…And he shrinks, no doubt, from the prospect of being addressed for the remainder of his life as Sir Lemuel.” “His name’s not Lemuel?” “I fear so, sir.” “Couldn’t he use his second name?” “His second name is Gengulphus.” “Golly, Jeeves,” I said, thinking of old Uncle Tom Portarlington, “there’s some raw work pulled at the font from time to time, is there not?” “There is indeed, sir.”
