www.mlb.com/news/best-landing-spots-for-cody-bellingerI'm still intrigued by signing Bellinger, not going to lie. Lineup for day 1 would be: 3B DJ LF Soto RF Judge CF Bellinger 2B Torres DH Stanton 1B Rizzo SS Volpe C Wells Then on the bench you'd have Trevino, Peraza, Grisham, Verdugo. I'm hugely concerned about both Stanton and Rizzo this year. Rizzo had a great 2022 season but that was in the midst of a multi year decline that last year seems more in line with. You can chalk it up to injury, but he's at an age where bouncing back from injury isn't a great proposition either. And then on Stanton, he's been in a multi year decline as well. That's just when he's actually out there. I don't need to even really start on the injury trouble there - we all know about that. I'm also not too keen on the idea of depending on Judge to play CF a ton. Adding Bellinger even after Soto and Verdugo addresses all of those concerns either directly or indirectly. Even in a world where everyone stayed healthy all year, just on scheduled rest days you're still probably going to get 120 starts out of each Peraza and Verdugo from that bench player list. They'll both play pretty much everyday in rotation. Peraza can back up SS/3B/2B directly and then also at 1B by virtue of DJ shifting across the diamond. Verdugo can back up all 3 OF spots and 1B by virtue of moving guys around. Grisham is probably going to play almost everyday even if he never starts just by way of pinch running and/or defensive replacement. Trevino will split time with Wells in what should be a close to even games played rotation (unless Wells REALLY breaks out). I'm not the biggest Bellinger fan and feel the contract has risk to be a dud, but it ain't my money. They seem intent on trying to forge open a contention window and only way I see for them to do that is to spend, spend, spend and hope it all clicks at least short term.

I like Bellinger too but I don't think Hal's budget has enough room for it.

Are neither Florial or Dominguez expected back by Spring Training? Couldn't one of them handle CF (although I got no problem playing Judge there a lot)?

Dominguez will likely start his MiLB rehab close to mid season. I’m not sure when Florial will be back, but if the timing is right he might get a chance to platoon a bit in CF… but unless he puts on a dazzling show and Jasson really has trouble regaining his stroke in his rehab, that could be a short stint before we turn him loose…

I'd just as soon play Florial.

I'd just as soon play Florial. Grisham likely has the better defensive metrics, but Florial is faster and has a better arm. Florial is the better base stealer. We had to take Grisham to complete the trade for Soto. Florial just never has any luck in these transactions.

Cash should have Joey handle the Yamamoto negotiations.

I'd just as soon play Florial. Perhaps some reason for optimism... Grisham career batting line vs. righties... .207/.310/.373 vs. lefties... .242/.333/.415 And those splits have become more exaggerated in recent years. In his early career he was a quality hitter vs. both handed pitchers. In recent years he's been trash vs. righties but maintained a quality batting line vs. lefties. It's an opposite of normal platoon split, but data is pretty consistent that he's a quality hitter vs. lefties. Verdugo has a traditional split for a left handed hitter - great vs. righties and bad vs. lefties. I think as things stand currently you could see Grisham get a lot of playing time vs. left handed starts and that be something that we actually end up happy about.

He’s also been a better hitter from 2019-21 .243 .334 .424 .758 107, mpg world beating, but with strong “D” in CF, I’ll take it. The kid takes his walks, has surprising pop, can steal a base. He hits better in high leverage situations… Maybe one of the issues the past couple of seasons has been over-exposure playing in over 150 games. I also noted that he hits finesse pitchers better than power pitchers, so I’m a bit concerned that he may not catch up to heat very well. At first, I wax hoping we could flip him. Now, I want to give this a chance to work…
