Suzie: “Well fans, exquse me whyle eye take a baffwoom bweak, brawht to ewe bi Scott Tissu Compawny.”… A true story you may relate to... As I've said, my wife and I drive up to Colorado several times a year. Since we're in no rush, I like to avoid the Interstate...take back roads to visit interesting, small towns along the way. One year we came out of Santa Fe thru Taos with plans to stop in Alamosa. At the time I was catching the Yankee games on MLB Radio/Sirius. Stirling was announcing the game. As I pulled into the hotel parking lot Yanks were down by two, bottom 9...runner on 1st, 2 outs...Chase Headley at the plate. So, I sat in the car to listen while my wife checked in. As I listened intently, Headley connected and Stirling gave one of his "It IS HIGH, IT IS FAR, IT IS GONE!!" to tie the game. I quickly rushed to the room to fire up my laptop to watch the rest of the inning...hopefully a Yankee walk off win. By the time I got settled in turned out the ball had bounced into the stands for a GR double...no run scored, Yanks lost. I can't post my reaction here, and what I called and still refer to Stirling as...kinda like Bucky ******* Dent. 😂

When I was still working I would stay at the Best Western in ‘Mosa (as some locals call it) when my job would send me here. I never dreamed I would be in the valley to live, much near Mosca of DC of 17. ] When we decided to sell out in Pueblo West, I searched every possible option on the front range and finally decided to cast a wider net. We almost bought a place in Manassa, but the house was old and though it was on the edge of town, I just felt it to be too close to neighbors. Plus it had a yard to mow with sprinklers and such. Probably weekly mowing. Yuck. The mountain view wasn’t great, either. There was a postage stamp sized spot outdoors that I could put a lawn chair and see through the trees. Here, Mt. Blanca and a string of her sisters stare out from about 15-20 miles away as the crow flies. The San Juan’s sit about 35-miles to the west as well. And mowing? Yes. Once or twice a summer. Just the right way to relax in retirement…

Interesting you mention Harrelson. As much as I despise him, I've actually chosen to listen to him when faced with the choice of him or Sterling/Suzyn. Hawk was knowledgeable about the sport and was a decent play by play, it was just his over the top homerism that got on some people's nerves. Some of his catch phrases and saying were actually funny, or at least I thought they were. I agree with that Chi. When he knocked off the schlock, he showed an intelligence about the game. Tim McCarver, who I also couldn't stand because he could never JUST SHUT UP was another who, if you caught him off-guard and he didn't have time to get full of himself, could actually be pretty interesting. Unfortunately those moments were few and far between.

I think they're an embarrassment, but I have come to accept that that is a minority viewpoint. Two generations of Yankee fans have passed by knowing only John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman as the radio voices of the Yankees. To me it's a clown show, every bit as bad as Hawk Harrelson was. They have less knowledge of the game than the average fan. But obviously people like them. Positively agree, Pipps. When I am blacked out in Texas from watching the Yankees when they play the Astros or the Rangers, I have tried to stick with Sterling and Waldman, but I just cannot do it. I OD on them very quickly and begrudgingly go to the opposition's radio broadcast. Hawk Harrelson was the worst. The definition of a "homer." Same here. If I'm in the car and radio is the only option, I will listen to any opposition broadcast I can find, even if it's the Red Sox or the Mets (who both actually have pretty good radio teams.) Sterling actually seems like he might be a pretty nice man away from the mic, but somewhat like a doddering old uncle at the rest home. I can't get past Suzyn's voice. I know she's performed in theatrical musicals but I can't conceive of how torturous that could be.

The biggest challenge has been the financial aspect. We’d be fine if things would quit breaking. We made some adjustments for the coming year, changing to a Medicare Advantage plan for next year that will cost us $102 each per month, compared to last year’s $450 for standard part B coverage. In the winter we don’t go exploring much, the propane tank is full and will last all winter. Hopefully we can replace some of the dollars we’ve had to put out due to recent emergencies… Overall life is good, and I’m intending to get a table at a farmers market and maybe some other venues to sell off some of our things that we don’t foresee using any more. I’ve thought about Facebook or Craig’s list, but there’s the need to meet people in a way I’d rather not go through that process. Too many jerks that don’t show up, or try to renegotiate at the last second. I love doing things around here on my schedule and terms…

Facebook pages can be tracked and you can easily tell if the seller is in a sketchy neighborhood, as they normally provide an established home address.

Facebook pages can be tracked and you can easily tell if the seller is in a sketchy neighborhood, as they normally provide an established home address. Yes, FB is better by far. I consulted with a couple FB sellers and asked about the challenges. The one that occurred the most regularly was going to a meet up site only to have the other party not show up. He started always texting them the day of about 15 mi Utes before the time he would have to leave the house. If they didn’t reply he didn’t bother to go. I became familiar with that little gambit when I had propane and later solar appointments. Drive 2-3 hours to a house only to find out “they forgot” or “something came up”. The second was wanting to renegotiate based on some unobtrusive, unnoticeable, or even non existent “flaw” on the item. It’s important to photograph legit flaws before selling and to make it clear the flaw has already been allowed for… But some people are… well.. some people. Honestly in the past I would have (and have) just given the stuff away, but circumstances have changed…

Talk about a wandering thread. We go from talking about Soto, who is likely going to become baseball’s second highest paid player to talking about thrifty living as a social security-only recipient.
But those of you who know me know that I love a good wandering thread… 🤓

He might be in the market for a "gently used" appliance if you have one to sell.

I usually count to ten just to make sure that he made the call correctly.

Highlights of that other OF the Yankees got in the Soto deal. If he could just hit .270 with a .340 OBP, we'd have something.

When it was first announced Grisham was part of the Soto trade, I looked up his numbers at B-R.com, and though he is left-handed, he actually has a reverse split, hitting lefties better than righties...please tell me that Cashman knew that prior to the trade.
