You cannot call a road game in March important but I'd feel a whole let better about my team if Rodon could last 5 innings.

Is apple TV the only option to watch this game? I believe so. Anthony has a link to some free Apple TV trials in the beginning of the thread. When I get back from dinner, I will try to see if I can find a pirated streaming link too. |

with a RH going for the astros, "babe" cabrera gets the start at 3B. after a horrible start during ST, finished strong and continued w a HR yesterday. rooting for the kid. guessing for now berti platoons against LH'ers.

Bertie’s career splits are odd. Higher BA vs LHP, better pop and OPB vs. RHP. If OzCab is going to play at all he should be playing a bit vs. RHP, where he has shown a bit of pop. If he keeps hitting I’m in favor of a platoon that gives a young player that’s home grown an opportunity to show his improvement. At some point either the real DJ re-enters the picture, or not…Maybe Torres will get that look at third base yet… 🤓

A few pregame posts, starting with...
Carlos Rodon starts for the Yanks, his first start of the season. As we all know hw was beyond terrible, beyond brutal last year. Yanks are trying to make him throw 4-5 different pitchers this year, instead of relying almost exclusively on his FB and slider. About the new assortment, we'll have to see 1) if he can command against major league teams in real games, and 2) if the new pitches, combined with proper sequencing, is enough to keep teams from sitting on what seemed like a significantly diminished fastball last year.
Rodon has made 9 starts against the Astros. He's 3-0 vs. Houston, 54 IP, 42 H, 18 runs, 15 earned, 7 HR, 15 BB, 53K.
His BAVG/OBA/SLG/OPS against them is .212/.277/.354/.630.
He's faced them once in the post-season and was forced out of the game in the 3rd inning, having allowed 3 hits, 2 BB and 2 ER in 2 2/3 innings with 3 K and a HBP. They pulled him so early despite throwing just 56 pitches because they were down 2-1 in the ALDS and it was an elimination game for them.
Cristian Javier goes for the Astros. He was 10-5 for the Astros last year, but his ERA jumped 2 full runs from 2022. He relies on a very deceptive fastball that isn't all that fast, but has elite spin and therefore elite vertical break upward, so much so that hitters think they see it as it comes in, but swing under it, popping it up or missing it altogether. He owned the Yanks from the moment he came up until last season, when, as part of his overall down season, they hit him pretty well in both of his starts against them.
Aside from the rising fastball that averages 93, which he threw not quite 60% of the time last year, he threw the slider around 30% of the time with an avg velo of about 80, a curve at 77 he threw about 8% of the time and a change at 84 that he threw 4% of the time.
Javier is 1-1 in 5 games (4 starts) against the Yanks, not counting his brilliant game against them in the 2022 ALCS.
25 2/3 innings, 11 hits, 7 runs, all earned, 8 BB and 33 K, 4 HR allowed. ERA is 2.45, WHIP is 0.78.
BAVG/OBA/SLG/OPS against him is .125/.214/.273/.487
