Nearly a mistake with the cutter up in the zone, and Alvarez just gets under it, flies to fairly deep left center. Verdugo catches, Altuve holds, 1 down.

Leaves a hanging change down the middle on the 1st pitch, and Tucker doesn't miss, smashed down the 1st base line for a RBI double, 3-2 Yankees.

Too many mistakes, waist high, middle or both.
And Boone isn't ready, doesn't have Loaisiga warmed yet. Sigh.

Ok, Yanks stalled long enough for Loaisiga to decide he's ready.
Comes in to face Bregman and Diaz. Problem is he's a contact pitcher, very few K's, considering his "stuff" and contact is not what you want with the tying run in scoring position.

Schmidt had his chance in the sixth. Too quick in his delivery, didn't get ahead, non-competitive pitches for balls, then fat pitches for strikes, and Houston can hit strikes over the middle of the plate.

Five innings of one rune ball for Clarke Schmidt! Boone didn't even leave the bench at 4 and 2/3rds and a single from Pena. It's a new year, everyone! Schmidt gets to go past the fifth in his first start and Stroman throws 101 pitches in his first start. Let's hope it stays that way. Enough of this ruin the bullpen before August. It was fun to see Schmidt getting the chance to start the sixth inning. For only a little while though. 🤓… |

I know we want Schmidt to go deeper.
I know Boone wants to build confidence in him, especially early in the year.
But this is Schmidt and these are the Astros. 3rd time through the order.

Sinker waist high inner half, a mistake, and Bregman inside outs it hard, but goes short hop right to Rizzo, he gets the out at 1st as Tucker goes to 1st.
Yanks got a break on that one, 10 feet left or right, and it's probably a tie game.

Sinker above the waist inner 3rd and he hits it hard up the middle for a game tying single.
And that's why you want Loaisiga starting innings and not as a high leverage with men in scoring position
