No oil on the dipstick??? You're very fortunate your engine didn't seize. I had a Mazda RX7 (rotary engine) I was restoring. Had drained the oil, and got called away before refilling. A few days later, forgetting I hadn't refilled, I took it out for a test drive on CO-470. By the time I got to Highlands Ranch...click...seized engined...end of restoration. As for miles between changes...5000 is more than adequate, especially with synthetic. I don’t know what the motivation could be to yell me the stick was dry, but I have serious doubts that it was. That’s why I’m checking every thousand miles right now. You would think that if it was using oil, there would have been enough usage at 3K miles that I would be able to detect some usage by now, that it would be down a quart or so by now. M I also intend to check after we get back from Pagosa Springs to see if the strain of mountain driving is a factor. I’m not good with mechanics, but I’m a bit of a curious arm chair scientist, so this is an interesting case for me to observe. The guy that owns the Valvoline Station also owns the transmission/mechanic shop where I go. If his oil store employers are money around I’m sure he’d want to know…and I am the kind of idiot that pulls out the calculator and checks his gas mileage every time I fill up. I feel like a change in mileage might be a harbinger of mechanical issues. When I got my transmission rebuilt I saw an increase in mileage of almost 1.5 miles per gallon… My father did that and my oldest brother continues to do so. There was a tiny little notebook in the glove compartment that kept the diary of years of tanks of gas. Since my father did so, there was no way I was following that example.

My webcast will be delayed as usual, so I'll be 2-4 pitches behind Gameday. So, no pitch-by-pitch (it's pointless) but I will do play-by-play.

Marlins pitcher Ryan Weathers is the son of David Weathers, who had parts of a couple of unproductive years ('96-'97) with the Yanks. When Weathers' slider was on, he was tough. "In the ALDS against Texas, Weathers was New York’s bullpen ace, leading all relievers on both teams with five shutout innings. He struck out five and allowed only one single. Looking to clinch the series at Arlington in Game Four, New York trailed 4-3 in the fourth inning when Torre called Weathers into the game with two on and nobody out. Juan Gonzalez stepped to the plate, batting 7-for-14 with five home runs. Arriving at the mound, Weathers and the infielders received one message from their manager. “Torre said, ‘Let’s pound the fastball in and get the double play.’ I’ll never forget Tino Martinez, when Joe walked off the mound, said, ‘You’re notthrowing him a first-pitch fastball. He’s killing us. He can’t hit your slider. Throw it until he doesn’t swing at it.’ Sure enough, I throw a slider and he fouled it off. Then I threw two more about a foot outside and he swung at both of them.” After the huge strikeout of Gonzalez, Weathers snuffed Texas’s rally by getting Will Clark to ground into an inning-ending double play. The Yankees came back to win and Weathers was credited with the series-clinching victory. Weathers blanked Baltimore in two games in the ALCS, earning a second win, then gave up his first run in October, pitching in three World Series games against Atlanta for a total of 11 nearly flawless postseason innings."

Arraez gets ahead 2-1, then grounds a low sinker to Rizzo who throws to Stroman covering, 1 down. (A soft chopper down the 1st base line that went over the bag before Rizzo fielded it.)

Volpe leading off! I think it might be a tad bit early for this. I hope he doesn't change his approach or feel the pressure. I’m thinking of Torres being dropped to #6. Perhaps he’s been pushing himself to see more pitches, and now starting to feel the pressure to perform to earn his big upcoming payday. I think the move may help him, allow him to open up and be a bit more aggressive. Contract years don’t always end up being great years. There are millions at stake for him… I had suggested Volpe to the leadoff spot last week based on his ability to get on base and steal although you did not think Volpe would steal more than 20 bases this year. I would take the over. Torres is not a leadoff hitter. Too streaky. I had also suggested he move into the 5 or 6 slot just like Boone did. Better suited for that part of the lineup. Looks like Boone maybe reads this Board.

Stroman gets ahead 1-2, and Burger chases a cutter out of the zone low/away for the K, 2 down.

Stroman gets away with a 90 mph waist high, and middle-in, on the first pitch to Chisholm as he takes it for a strike. Chisholm spoiling pitches, 3 straight fouls after 1-1. Slider in the drop the bat happy zone for a left-hand hitter, but Chisholm misses, grounds it to Torres to end the inning. He hit it pretty hard (101.7) but right at Torres.
Bottom 1, 0-0 20 pitches in the 1st for Stroman.
