My self imposed ban of 20 games in which I did not criticize a Boone lineup is over. In all seriousness, he's done a good job of keeping things consistent despite a couple guys in the middle of the order not hitting. We are in a stretch of games without a day off so it looks like he's electing to give some guys a rest. It would be nice if a couple guys who are struggling would contribute some O today, if not, it's hard to imagine we put up many runs. That glut of infielders we talked about at the beginning of ST has seemingly vanished.

No Gleyber too and a Jahmai Jones sighting. Gleyber needs a mental reset. Glad he’s getting a day to break his routine.

If Sterling was doing the game and Jones hit a HR, I wonder if his HR call would be that he would start singing the chorus lyrics of The Coaster's song "Along Came Jones".

Zach Eflin, starts today for the Rays. With the injuries to five different Rays' starters: Rasmussen, McClanahan, Springs, Baz and Bradley, Eflin is current notional "ace" of the Rays staff. In 2023, he had the best year of his career by quite a bit, tied for the AL lead in wins, going 16-8, with a 3.50 ERA and a terrific WHIP of just over 1.00. His finished 6th in the Cy Young Award voting for the AL. This year, in 4 starts, he's 1-2 with a 4.63 ERA. In 23 1/3 innings, allowed 26 hits, 12 runs (all earned), 4 HR, 2 BB and K'd 20. His WHIP is a solid 1.200. He's had two good ones and two bad ones, but his last start against the Angels in Tampa was a great one: 6 1/3 shutout innings, 6 hits, 0 runs, 0 BB and 5 K.
Against the Yanks in his career, he's pitched very well in 5 starts. 3-1 with an ERA of 1.80, 29 innings, 25 hits, 8 runs, 6 earned, 3 HR, 5 BB, and 36 K's. His WHIP is a terrific 0.944. In 3 starts against them last season, he was good but not as good as before: 2-1 with an ERA of 3.00. In 18 innings, 17 hits, 6 earned runs, 3 HR, and just 2 BB with 25 K. His WHIP against them last season was just 1.055. The Yankee team quadruple slash line vs. Eflin is ..232/.266/.333/.599.
Repertoire: Eflin has a been a 5 pitch righty since 2019, but when he got to the Rays last season, he almost doubled his use of his cutter, while cutting down on his fastball about as much. This year, he's using the cutter a bit less and his slider a bit more, at least so far, and he's all but dropped his changeup altogether. His FB has decreased in average velocity by about 3 mph since it peaked in his 3rd season in 2018. So far this season: FB at 92 about 47% of the time, Curve at 80 about 21% of the time, cutter at 87 about 20% of the time, slider at 80-81 about 11% of the time, and a change 89 that he's throwing about once every game.
=======================
Nestor Cortes goes for the Yanks. He had two great seasons in 2021 and 2022, but last year a shoulder injury turned his season into a bad one. He got off to a great start, then came the injury. His effectiveness plummeted and he was eventually forced to shut things down for the year after a one-start comeback and reinjury, This year, so far, he's pitching OK: In 4 stats, he'a 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA. In 22 innings, he's allowed 20 hits, 11 runs (all earned), 3 HR, 5 BB and K'd 19. His WHIP so far this year is solid at 1.136, He struggled in his last start against the Guardians in Cleveland, needing 94 pitches to get through just 4 innings, allowing 5 hits, 4 runs and 2 HR while striking out 6.
Against the Rays, Nestor has pitched 12 times, including 7 starts. In 50 innings, he's allowed 43 hits, 25 runs (all earned), 8 HR, 13 BB, with 41 K. His ERA against them is 4.50, but the WHIP is an excellent 1.12. Last year he made 1 start against the Rays, but it was after he hurt the shoulder, and they belted him around: 4 1/3 innings, 7 hits, 6 earned runs, 1 HR, 2 BB and 3 K, in a game the Yanks rallied from 6-0 down to win 9-8.
As we all know, Nestor depends on having excellent location in every game, because he tops out at 92-93, 94 or 95 are rare. He throws the FB and cutter up and up and in to get whiffs, popups and flyball, He throws the slider for the back door and on the back leg to righties and down and away to lefties for K's and the occasional change to keep righties off balance.

Last night the Red Sox and Jays won, but the Royals beat the Orioles. So the Yanks start the day 1 1/2 games up on the O's, 3 up on the Jays, and 3 1/2 up on the Red Sox and Rays who are tied for 4th and 5th. All five AL East teams remain above .500 to start the day.

If you weren’t tuned in, there was a nice pregame tribute for Sterling. He looked more confused than anything, but you could see he was touched by it…

Game underway.
Diaz doesn't take the first pitch, fouls off a waist high FB outer 3rd. FB way high at 91, 1-1 Slider bounced inside, 2-1 FB at the top of the zone outside of middle, grounded to Jones for the 1st out.

Arozarena, cutter near the top, swung under, 0-1 FB near the top, again swung under 0-2 FB to the top outside corner, again swung under, K.
See THAT Schmidt, in case you have no idea what that is, it's called having enough command to finish hitters quickly.

Cutter to Ramirez near middle is strike 1. Backdoor slider hits the low outside corner, and Ramirez lifts a fly to right. Easy play for Soto, inning over. That inning by Nestor is the Anti-Schmidt Method. Using outstanding command of merely solid stuff, a 9 pitch 1-2-3
Bottom 1, 0-0
