Paul Blackburn starts for the A's. He was drafted by the Cubs with a supplemental 1st round pick in 2012, and traded to the A's with Daniel Vogelbach in a deal for pitcher Mike Montgomery and a minor leaguer. This is his 8th major league season, but he's been hurt frequently, and has made 20 starts in the majors in just the last two seasons. Before this year, he had a career record of 17-24 with a career ERA of 4.90 and a WHIP of 1.431. It comes then as a bit of a surprise he's come charging out of the gate this year to be one of the best pitchers in the league so far. In 4 starts, he's 2-0 with a 1.08 ERA. In 25 innings, he's allowed just 17 hits, 3 runs, 8 BB with 18 K and hasn't yet allowed a HR. His WHIP is an outstanding 1.000. The only caveat here is that he's yet to face a truly outstanding offense; his four starts have come against Cleveland, Detroit, Washington and St. Louis; Cleveland has somehow been scoring a lot of runs, but we saw their lineup a week and a half ago and it isn't that good. Yankees' pitching held them down most of that series.
Against the Yankees, Blackburn has made 3 starts and has done very well. He's 1-0, with an ERA of 2.35. In 15 1/3 innings, he's allowed 14 hits, 4 runs, 4 BB and 13 K, but has given up 3 HR. His WHIP against the Yankees is 1.174 and the team's quaruple slash line against him is .250/.312/.446/.758. He got his only win against the Yankees last year. In a game in Oakland in late June. In a 2-1 A's win, he went 5 1/3 innings, giving up 4 hits, 1 BB and 5 K's; the only run against him was a solo HR by Josh Donaldson, of all people.
Repertoire: Blackburn is a 5-pitch righty, and he's made one small adjustment to his pitch mix this season so far: He's using his FB 1 pitch less per inning, and his changeup 1 pitch more per inning. The FB averages 92 (might be a sinker mixed with a 4-seamer or standing along...EDIT: found a note on the website that covers pitching and pitchers extensively that he's using his sinker for 2/3 of his "fastballs" and his 4-seamer for the other 1/3); he uses it 32% of the time so far. He also has a cutter about 89 and a change about 85, both of which he uses 20% of the time, and also a slider 81-2 about 17% of the time and a curve 70-80 he uses about 10% of the time. There are very few MLB pitchers who use that many pitches in such an even distribution. For the pitch mix, he seems like one of those "any pitch, any time, any count, any situation" pitchers.
=================
Marcuse Stroman for the Yanks. He's pitched very well so far this year, but is just 1-1 in 4 starts. He's thrown 22 1/3 innings, allowed 17 hits, 9 runs, 6 earned, given up 2 HR, and struck out 19. The sole blemish on his record is that he's walking too many guys, 3.6 per 9, for a guy who doesn't get many K's. In his last start, he battled the Jays to a draw, stuggling to get through 5 1/3 innings, but allowed only two runs, and the Yanks rallied late to win 6-4.
Against the A's, Stroman has a solid record. In 7 starts against them, he's 1-1 with 5 no-decisions. In 42 1/3 innings, he's allowed 38 hits, 18 runs, 17 earned, 17 BB and K'd 40, and has allowed them just 3 HR, which is probably why his ERA against them is a decent 3.61, while the WHIP is a rather high 1.299. The A's team quadruple slash line against him is .238/.309/.331/.640

hopefully stroman can keep the string of good starts going. our starters have now allowed 0 runs over their last 3 starts and over the last 5 have a 0.88 ERA. unfortunately we've lost 2 of those games. in both of those losses our starters went 7 scoreless. problem has been lack of hitting and bullpen failures.
fwiw boone's lineups have been uncharacteristically consistent this season.

Last night, the Orioles and Jays won, and the Rays lost, so the Yanks have dropped out of first for the first time this season (and maybe for the last time, too). They now trail the O's by 1/2 game. The Red Sox had Monday off and trail the O's by 2 1/2 and the Yanks by 2. The Jays kept pace and are tied with the Sox for 3rd at 13-10. The Rays fell back to .500, and are 4 games behind the Orioles and 3 1/2 back of the Yanks.

Just throwing it out there. Gleybers going deep. Sure hope you're right. He needs something to get him going.

Ruiz... Sinker up in the zone, 0-1 Chases the slider going well outside, 0-2 Takes the slurve way low and outside, 1-2 Misses a slider that started up in the zone and broke just off the plate away, K, 1 down

Rooker... Bad slider down the middle fouled off, 0-1 Sinker backs up near the outside corner and he gets the favorable call, 0-2 Missed by 2 inches. Hangs a slurve just above middle and Rooker misses, fouls it off. Got away with that pitch. Slider way low/away, 1-2 Same pitch, same result, 2-2 Sinker misses low/away, not close, 3-2. From 0-2 to 3-2 Sinker outside, Rooker chases and fouls it off. Still 3-2 Tries to bunt him inside with a sinker, but too far inside, 4 to 6 inches to get a chase. Ball 4 Well, it was going to be a fast inning but it isn't anymore.

Stroman back to wearing that odd getup under his hat today… if I was batting against him I’d complain that it’s distracting and insist he change it out for a dark color. Just to be a jerk, and look for an edge…
