Joe Ross starts for the Brewers. He's the brother of Tyson Ross, who pitched for five major league teams in a 10-year MLB career. Joe is in his 7th season, and his first with any team other than the Nationals. He signed as a free agent with the Brewers last December. He's 27-30 in his career with a 4.25 ERA. He pitched well his first two seasons with the Nats, but can't stay healthy, never having started more than 19 games in any of his six previous seasons. This year, in four starts, he's 1-2 with an ERA of 4.05. In 20 innings, he's allowed 22 hits, 12 runs, 9 earned, 1 HR and 9 BB, with 18 K. His WHIP is a subpar 1.550. He pitched good games in 3 of his 4 starts, only the Padres beat him up soundly two starts ago.
He's made 1 start against the Yanks in his career, back in 2021. He went 5 innings in a no-decision in a game in early May in Washington that the Yanks eventually won 3-2. He gave up 3 hits, 2 runs, 1 HR, walked 5 and struck out 7. The Yankees' team quadruple slash line against him is .167/.348/.333/.681
Repertoire: Although Ross throws four pitches, he relies very heavily on the fastball and slider. So far this season with the Brewers, the righty has thrown his FB about 10% less and his slider about 10% more than he has in past seasons. Current pitch mix through 4 starts: FB in the mid 90's a little more than 50% of the time, Slider at 86 a little more than 40% of the time, a change at 91 or 20 about 4% of the time and a curve about 83 about twice a game.

For the Yankees, Carlos Rodon tonight. The results are good on paper, but he's been less than overwhelming if actually watch his starts. The YES guys keep talking about how great his stuff looks and how good is FB is, but it's not translating into his dominance of years past, especially 2021 and 2022. Still trying to complete his transformation from 90% thrower and 10% pitches into a more equal mix of the two by using his cutter curve and change to get hitters off the FB and slider, and to save some stuff for key pitches in high leverage situations. He's not there yet.
In 5 starts, he's 2-2 with a 2.70 ERA. In 26 2/3 innings, he's allowed 23 hits, 8 runs, all earned, 2 HR, 13 BB with just 22 K's. His WHIP is a still mediocre 1.350. Compared to his two best seasons where he got some Cy Young votes, his hits per 9 innings is up considerably, his BB/9 is way up and his K/9 is way down, while his HR/9 is about the same as it was in his top seasons.
Most of what I call the luck indicators shows he's been lucky so far. His strand percentage is a very high 82%, about 10% better than the normal #2-3 starter. His HR/FB rate is just 5%, half the normal rate. His K-BB rate is a dreadful 7%, the average MLB starter is around 15%. His luck to date is unlikely to hold up the whole season, as indicated by his FIP with is over 4.00, probably where his ERA should be right. I'm not say Rodon's has been BAD. He's been mediocre, while his surface says he's been very good. He hasn't been. Against a good lineup, which the Brewers have, in a good hitter's Park which Miller Park is, his luck might run out tonight.
Rodon has started 3 times vs. Milwaukee. H's 0-1 with 2 no-decisions. In 11 innings, he's allowed 15 hits 6 runs, 4 earned 2 HR, 5 BB and 13 K. His ERA against them is 3.27, but the WHIP is way up there at 1.818. His last start against them came in 2022. He went 5 innings for a no-decision, allowing 8 hits, 1 run, 0 HR, 3 BB and struck out 7. The Brewers quadruple slash line against him is .326/.396/.500/.896

Yanks' lineup vs. Ross
Only 5 Yankees have faced Ross before:
Rizzo is 5-13 with 2 doubles, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K and 1 HBP Stanton is 2-10 with a two run HR, 3 BB, and 3 K Torres is 1-3 with a solo HR and a K Verdugo is 0-3 with 2 K.
The only other Yankees who's ever batted vs. Ross is Marcus Stroman, who's 0-1 against him, and very unlikely to face him tonight, to say the least.
==============
Brewers' lineup vs. Rodon
Six Brewers have face Rodon before:
Contreras is 1-4 with BB and a K Adames is 3-10 with a double, 2 RBI, 1 BB, and 3 K Hoskins is 2-6 with a double and K Sanchez is 0-5 with 2 K If Owen Miller gets the start, he's 1 for 5 with a double, a RBI and 3 K And Jake Bauers is unlikely to start, but he's 1-5 with Rodon with a RBI, 2 BB and 2 K.

Last night, the Yanks took a brutal loss that Boone all but gave to the Brewers, 7-6 in 11 linnings. They got lucky; all the other East teams lost as well. The A's beat the O's 3-2 in 10 innings, the White Sox beat the Rays, 9-4, the Dodgers crushed the Jays, 12-2 and the Cubs pounded the Red Sox, 7-1. Because everyone lost, the relative standings remain the same: O's percentage points ahead of the Yanks in first, both teams in a virtual tie at 7 games over .500. The Sox 2 games back in 3rd, the Rays and Jays tied for 4th and 5th, 2 games back of the Sox, and 4 games behind the Yanks and O's.
I don't mean to snow under the start of the thread, but in the old YES game chat, I used to do the NL and AL leaders every Saturday, interspersed with chat about the game. But I'm going to try to follow the Knicks game tonight as well as the Yankees game within the thread, and I'll have no time to do the leaders during the game. So I present them here at the start of the thread. If/when the Knicks/Rangers are eliminated or win their respective titles, I'll start dropping them in the thread, a bit at a time...
========================= Without further ado...

As we are almost 30 games into the season, the season's stats start to become relevant and I offer the first edition on The Saturday Leaders™:
Among AL hitters.... Bobby Witt of the Royals leads in bWAR with 1.8 Jose Altuve leads in BAVG at .346 Juan Soto in OBA at .437 Tyler O'Neill, now on the Res Sox, leads in slugging at .705, and in OPS at 1.137 Steven Kwan of the Indians lead in runs with 23 Jarren Duran of the Sox leads in AB and PA with 114 and 126, respectively; Soto is tied with Duran in PA Kwan and Altuve are tied for the lead in hits with 37 Four players are tied in doubles with 8: Altuve, Witt, Torkelson of the Tigers and Justin Turner of the Jays Witt leads in triples with 4 The revived Mike Trout leads in HR with 10. Sal Perez of the Royals leads in RBI with 25. Soto leads in BB with 22 Joseph Siri of the Rays leads in batter K's with 39 Jose Caballero of the Rays leads in SB with 9 Witt leads in extra base hits with 16. Soto leads in most of the Sabermetric offensive evaluation stats: runs created, batting runs, batting wins, offensive winning percentage, There are three hitters with 2 sac flies, tied for the lead; but it's too boring to tell you who they are. Giminez of the Indians leads in HBP with 7. To add to his disastrous start, Aaron Judge leads the AL in GIDP with 8, but he has company, of the three batters who've grounded into 5 DPs, (2nd most), two are also Yankees, Verdugo and Trevino.

In the NL Mookie Betts leads in WAR at 2.7 And in BAVG at .382 And in OBA at .485 and in OPS at 1.130 And in PA, runs scored and hits with 132, 28, and 42 and like Soto, he leads in walks, times on base and all the sabermetric categories. Suffice it to say, Betts is the early favorite for the NL MVP Award. On the power side, Ohtani is cleaning up the awards, leading in Total Bases, doubles, and extra base hits with 77, 14 and 22. Marcel Ozuna of the Braves leads in HR with 9 and RBI with 31 Surprising no one, Joey Gallo just went on the IL, but still leads the NL and all of MLB, with 43 K's Elly de la Cruz of the Reds is having a great start to his season; he leads MLB in steals with 17 Brendan Donavan of the Cards leads in HBP with 5 Ketel Marte of the D'backs leads with 4 sac flier And Bryce Harper of the Phillies leads the NL in GIDP with 7.

Among AL pitchers Jose Berrios of the Jays is off to a great starts and leads in pitcher bWAR at 1.8 And in ERA at 1.28 And tied for the lead in wins with Seth Lugo of the Royals with 4. 16 different pitchers have started 6 games already. Lugo leads in innings pitched with 38 Luis Castillo of the Mariners leads in K's with 42. Tarik Skubal is having a breakout season for the Tigers, leads the AL in WHIP with a microscopic 0.74. I don't usually list this, but Ronel Blanco, the rookie callup by the Astros, has a ridiculously low hits/9 ratio so far: 3.67. Garret Crochet of the White leads in K/9 at 12.14. Zac Eflin of the Rays leads in BB/0 at just 1.019 There are 4 complete games, 2 of which are CG shutouts, but I won't list those, yet. I don't usually list most walks, but right now, it's Luis Gil of the Yanks with 19. Berrios, Lugo and Skubal lead most of the sabermetric measures, but Kutter Crawford of the Sox leads in FIP at 2.16. And Clay Holmes of the Yanks leads in saves with 9.

On the NL side Ranger Suarez leads in pitcher bWAR with 1.6 "Rookie" Shota Imanaga of the Cubs leads in ERA at 0.98 Six NL pitchers are tied for the lead with 4 wins, 4 starters, including Glasnow, Imanaga, Nola of the Phillies, and Suarez, along with (ain't this a sign of the times?) 2 relievers, Alan Minter of the Braves and Reed Garrett of the Mets. Suarez also leads in WHIP at 0.697. Dylan Cease of the Padres leads in H/9 with a preposterous 3.337 Imanaga leads in BB/9 at 0.976 Rookie phenom Jared Jones of the Pirates leads in K/9 at 12.10 Nola leads in Innings with 39 1/3 Zack Wheeler of the Phillies leads in total K's with 46 Joe Musgrove of the Padres is the only starter who's started 7 games in the NL, at least, as of now Rangers Suarez and Max Fried of the Braves have the only shutouts (and also the only complete games) in the NL so far this season. And Robert Suarez of the Padres is tied with Holmes for the MLB lead in saves with 9, and leads the NL.
